Hi all

Has anyone done a London to Glasgow trip in their Taycan? I'm doing it next week and was wondering if there were good places to stop for charging on route, or whether its completely pot luck. Any advice appreciated .

Cheers

I would prioritise Ionity, as I assume you'll have the three years of free Ionity membership you get with a new Taycan, which makes it one of the cheapest. It's also the fastest and as long as you pre-heat the battery you should get 250 kW +.

Ideally you would break the journey up into three legs (so two charging stops, assuming you start with 100% and don't mind arriving in Glasgow needing a charge), but I think the middle leg would be too long if you want to solely use Ionity, so I would drop in to Ionity Darwen Services near Blackburn to make it four legs.

First leg - London to Stafford Ionity
Around 153 miles

Second leg - Stafford Ionity to Ionity Darwen Services
Around 81 miles

Third leg - Darwen Services to Ionity Gretna
Around 109 miles

Fourth leg - Ionity Gretna to Glasgow
Around 85 miles

You shouldn't need to charge for long at each stop (we're talking minutes). However, if you want to stop for something to eat, then I would pick a slower charger along the route.

Sorry probably a bit late now but this is a route I do reasonably regularly (I live in Glasgow and folks are in Beaconsfield just to the West of London). As mentioned Stafford Ionity is normally a no-brainer stop for me as it has 6 chargers (one or two of them do occasionally go OOS for some reason), they work with plug and charge, and there is a Starbucks to grab a quick drink/snack in while you charge.

It is possible to make it to Gretna from there if you charge up enough and take it easy (and potentially use range mode), however that only has four of the older "app authorised" chargers and tends to be quite busy, so you may have to wait a few minutes. On the plus side I have never ended up being charged for that one so I think it is stuck in perpetual free vend mode (probably why it is so popular). There are also 60kW Gridserve chargers at Gretna if you can't wait or there are problems, but currently only two - when I was there earlier in the month it looks like they are in the process of adding more in though, probably 350kW ones too.

If I want to play it a bit safer and not worry about pushing my luck I sometimes use the Porsche South Lakes chargers to bridge the gap between Stafford and Gretna, though they are a bit more expensive as you have to pay the per minute charge too. There are only two but they are quite rarely in use and you'll probably only need a few minutes there at most anyway.

I've not used the Darwen services at Blackburn before as they would involve a more substantial diversion off the M6 - not sure if it is cheaper to use them versus the Porsche South Lakes given the extra mileage you would end up doing.

I've had two free charges in the two months I've owned my Taycan, one of which was Darwen Services. I know they were vending for free not long after they were installed. I wonder if they still are?

After looking at my last Porsche Charging service invoice it looks like they have finally got round to charging for Gretna Green again - oh well, was nice while it lasted!
