I was going to do a last hop to a charger along the route. I had about 15% remaining with estimated 6% at arrival. All seemed well. Outside temperature was about -1 celcius with battery temperature about 3 degrees. I put in the charger as destination and I could see that it started pre-heating the battery. About half way the charge started dropping precipitously and the car started freaking out. It wanted me to re-route to a closer (slower) charger with dire warnings about not making it to the original destination. In the end I canceled route guidance and got to the original charger with 3% remaining.
Does pre-heating the battery take A LOT of energy which would explain the rapid drop in remaining charge? If so, shouldn't the car dial it back if it realises it can't make it? Alternatively, is the computer overly conservative about the remaining charge it allows at destination?
What experience do people have - is it better to not put the charger as destination if it's a bit close to empty?
