Does anyone here know why VW let Porsche to develop the J1 platform? Are there any other cars that will be utilizing the J1 platform in the pipeline for the group? It seems like all the upcoming premium cars are going to be built on the PPE...What's the difference between the 2 platforms as both the Taycan and e-tron GT are just sports sedans...Seems a bit wasteful to develop a platform for 2 cars...

Four days ago, EVO magazine wrote this:
"The key difference between PPE and Porsche’s J1 platform is, put simply, size. The J1 is inherently lower and smaller, with close ties to the 911 around the scuttle and front subframe that limits its ultimate modularity.
By contrast, PPE will have almost no limits to its modularity, according to Audi’s engineers, with the ability to move key hard points such as the scuttle height, dash-to-axle ratio, wheelbases, and track widths to accommodate models of all shapes and sizes."

Thanks for the info, but it seems like the PPE can be scaled to the size of a Taycan... obviously, there will be some compromises, but it doesn't make much sense to have a separate platform for such a low volume car...

“Obviously there will be some compromises“ …. so you’ve basically answered you own question. Porsche wasn’t going to compromise on anything that didn’t HAVE to for their marquee EV announcement. My guess is you profoundly misunderstand the Taycan’s role in Porsche’s EV business strategy. There’s a reason why the Turbo S came first despite being ridiculously priced and the base model has only just come out. Porsche needed to prove it could make a true Porsche with an EV power train instead of what basically everyone else except Tesla has done which is slap their badge on a POS.

Porsche co-developed J1 with Audi. They aren’t re-badging an ID.3

also, J1 came first, and PPE wasn’t available for Taycan development.

i’m really not sure why you’re confused Porsche is doing its own thing to the greatest extent it can. It doesn’t share the Cayman or 911 platform with VW either. Now it does share a lot more in the SUV platforms …

Maybe Porsche did not compromise on the driving dynamics on the car, but there are so much cost cutting inside the car....The interior simply does not feel like a car at this price range (please do not compare it to a Tesla). Obviously, the accountant has as much say as the engineer in this case...

If they had put the resources from the J1 development on to the PPE, I am sure they could have bring it to the market sooner....

You are right, it doesn't. J1 was born 'cause there wasn't anything else available. Now there is MEB and PPE, so J1 will most likely die out quickly.

so … nope. The J1 was in development before 2015. PPE was started in 2018. Allegedly PPE was influenced by the Model 3. There’s no way the PPE could have been retrofitted to a taycan and shipped in 2019.

This makes more sense now...so basically J1 is a niche to compete against the Model S...but then diesel gate happens, VW goes all in on EV, and then MEB and PPE was born?

yes, in broad strokes. The J1 isn’t specifically about competing against the model S so much as Porsche proving it can build an EV worthy of its heritage, and cannibalizing the Panamera made a lot more sense, and still does, given the technical constraints like pack size, weight and volume.

It might make more sense if you think of it this way: Porsche has gotten a huge amount of extremely flattering press for its EV business leading into the inevitable Macan launch. That the taycan is profitable is just a perk. Porsche is the first company to even plausibly compete against Tesla in this space. Even Audi is 2 years behind, to say nothing about BMW or Mercedes …
