Speedometer Error

In several countries, including UK, it’s a legal requirement that speedometers never read under the actual speed. In order to err on the side of caution, many manufacturers slightly over state speed to create a margin of error and still be legal.

I understand this when we used to use older systems; but to me, it seems bizarre that this still exists as a concern as we have switched to more modern technology.
