Hi all,

I've had my Taycan for 14 months and for the first 5 months all was good and I was successfully charging my car using my Rolec charger and smart charging via the EV Energy app. The car went in to my local dealer (Porsche Centre Tewkesbury) in April for a major software update and it came back unable to charge unless I disabled smart charging or used direct charging. The car spent a week in the dealer in June for them to investigate. No specific faults were found but they came up with a workaround using a combination of a profile and timer. Whilst this works to some extent, I can't limit charging to the 0030-0430 window that Octpus Go use for their cheap electricity. Whenever I switch the charger to smart charging using the app the car fails to communicate with the charger and the "charging not possible" message appears.

I'd be grateful for any advice on how to resolve this issue. At the moment I'm in the situation where neither Rolec / EV Energy or Porsche are interested in sorting it.

Rob.

Probably need more details to help further.

Do you use Timers and / or Profiles - set in the PCM?

Not sure what you mean by 'Smart Charging' but suggest disabling it?

Generally, don't use any features (programming times etc) on your EVSE (Rolec in this case) - just set to 'dumb' mode and rely on the Timers and Profiles within the PCM / My Porsche Website / My Porsche App / and for a short while Porsche Connect App as these are all one and the same thing.

Various 'things' were enhanced with the round of major software updates which may now present some issues with your Rolec (I'm assuming its firmware is up to date?).

Any reason not to be using your Porsche Mobile Charger Plus (PMC+) as your EVSE?

I'm sure we can resolve on the forum but if you could answer the questions above that would help to filter and target advice.

A profile and timer should work flawlessly and will provide the control you need for off-peak periods etc.

Yup, basically the update ruins the basic functionality of the timer. Mine worked fine for months charging 4 hours only regardless, software update applied, then timer/profiles wouldn’t work for this use. My thread here,

https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/will-my-car-charge-tonight.4634/page-4#post-64828

The other thread helps to a degree, but guesstimating and setting Max’s/ mins is just crazy imo. I gave up, turned off timers and profiles and I can use the pod point app that just charges for 4 hours every night, no drama. Only issue is when plugged in on the app it will show as charging error, but a small inconvenience for just plugging in and forgetting. Does you charger have an app to allow you to do this?

Thanks for your reply, Nick. I've tried turning off the timer and profile by using direct charging but this doesn't work either. Perhaps I should try disabling the timer and profile but not use direct charging?

Thanks for this, Adrian.

Before the upgrade I was using a Home profile along with automatic (Smart) charging using the EV energy app which ensured I only charged between 0030 and 0430. This kept my running costs at around 2p a mile.

Following Porsche's interventions I am now using a profile and timer. However, this doesn't limit the charging to the low price electricity as the timer species the charge level which it will always achieve.

I'm pretty sure the charger is using the current firmware but I will check this out. I'm using a Rolec Wall Pod. The charger is definitely visible on my EV enery app.

I had the charger installed before I got the car which is why I'm not using the Porsche Mobile version. I'd need to get an electrician in to wire it into my 32A supply in order to provide 7kW charging. I'm not sure this is worth the effort or expense though.

Having read through one or two other threads I'm just going to try disabling the profile and charge and see if the charger will talk to the car. I suspect it won't!

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi, yes, just ensure profiles and timers are not ticked so inactive. No need to touch direct charge. The cars systems become nul and void and just use the house charger app as a normal old skool timer ( providing your charging app supports a timer). As I said it will show as red charging error on app but charges during the required 4 hours perfectly.

This should be simple to resolve.
Disable everything in your EVSE and rely only on a profile and a timer set on the PCM or via My Porsche App.

In the profile set minimum to 25%, preferred charging time to 00:30 and 04:30. Set a daily timer to have a departure time of 04:30 and target charge of 85%.

If your electrical supply is not able to provide this level of charge then you need to seriously review your setup. A dedicated 32A feed is essential for 7.4kW and will provide a reliable overnight charging environment to comfortably achieve 85% or even 100% SOC.

For a few hundred quid it's a no brainer.

Depending of the SOC of the battery prior to charging then the time available (4.5hrs) may not be long enough to meet your target SOC.

I think if OP - Rob does this with a lower state of charge say less than 50% the car will start to charge before 00:30 to reach the target of 85% by 04:30?

This would not solve his issue as he only wants to charge between 00:30 and 04:30.

I agree this would work if he has >50% charge when plugging in.

Depends on a) starting SOC, and b) max charge rate available - if 7.4kW then should be fine.

Looking at my app this may have done the trick. Just used 28kWh in the off peak period. Thanks for the advice. I'll see if this carries on over the next week or so.
