RWD, 4S and Tubo S are roughly USD $294K, $416K and $713K respectively WITHOUT any options.

"Outlandish" is an understatement.

It's not a VAT, it's call a first time registration tax. It's a luxury tax. For over a decade until April 2018, there was no FRT on all EVs. That's why you will see so many Model S and Model X in Hong Kong. That changed afterwards and the current FRT relief for EVs is roughly 37K USD.
