My wife just returned with our CT4S. According to the trip data on my phone, she had travelled 35 miles thence and 35 miles back. She took 57 mins there and 50 back. So far so unremarkable.

She left home with 188 miles, she returned with 83 miles. Hm. Now, I appreciate that these ranges are estimates, based on previous consumption stats. Since we typically average 3 miles/kWh, these estimates are typically quite good.

So ... 70 miles of actual road required 100 miles of fuel.

Fuel consumption on the way out was reportedly just 1.9 miles/kWh (worst we have ever seen); on the way back, 3.0 miles/kWh (normal). Terrain is flat with perhaps a slight downward slope on the way out. Both trips were mainly motorway and done by ACC.

What did this car do on the way out? I cannot see the air con or other consumers pull 10 kW for 1hr. Any ideas?

My wife noticed the range estimate gap down as she pulled off the motorway on the way out.

One explanation involves a short drive without shutting off the car, followed by a high speed/high acceleration secondary portion that would keep the distance constant yet use more energy, but still arriving roughly on time.
Another option is driving with much harder acceleration and braking to reduce efficiency on the drive with the lower efficiency.
Perhaps recreate the drive yourself and maybe you’ll note that one way involves an uphill route while the other is mostly downhill.

Completely dry. And there was no great acceleration involved - the car cruised in ACC along the motorway.

I thought she might have accidentally started the rear window heater but manual says that car would switch this off after 5 mins given our summer temperatures.

Heated seats she would have noticed.

I had an idea I wish to canvas opinion on. Unusually, my wife was not using Apple CarPlay. She had a copilot on board and they decided to program the Taycan sat nav. What they did not know was that when I last used that, I had checked the "Use charge planner" option and I had programmed a desired charge at my destination of 80%. This explains why my wife was complaining to me about the car wanting to take her in the opposite direction to her destination, towards a service station.

Now, I know from experience that when you use the charge planner, the Taycan starts to precondition the battery in anticipation of the upcoming charging stop. I have observed that this means, for example, that the car starts to heat up the battery. If you ignore the scheduled stop, the car immediately inserts another at the next-nearest charger. And keeps the battery ready for charging.

Is this a possible explanation for the high battery usage on that journey out?
