You may think that the best EV for a road trip is the one with the longest range. But it's not that simple, as this new test shows.

When we talk about road trips in EVs, most readers and buyers hyper-fixate on range.
This new test of the 2025 Porsche Taycan shows why charging speed is just as important, allowing you to go further off of 15-minute, normal pit stops.
The 2025 Porsche Taycan posts the best result ever in this fantastic test from Out Of Spec.

While a Chevy or Tesla may be able to go over 400 miles on a charge, it'll take over a half hour for them to get from 10-80%, meaning your stops will be longer. On the Taycan, that isn't an issue. Kyle from Out Of Spec notes that his long-term, RWD, base Taycan tester with the bigger battery has consistently pulled over 320-kW speeds on most charging stops. It'll hold around 300-kW speeds until about 65%.

Except it has no autopilot functionality which is huge on road trips....

The test methodology does not match road trip driving, simply the first leg of a trip that just happens to start with a functioning 350kW charger with an available tower. And right at the end of the article is "Just make sure your route has the right chargers." Glad to see the significantly improved charging speeds on J1.2 but I'd be happier to see reliable CCS charging. The improved charge curve will make no difference at all when the 350kW tower is delivering 120kW and you have to wait for a tower to free up.

I am going to disagree with this assessment because if I am on a road trip in my Chevy Silverado RST why do I have to charge to 80% every time? If I am planning to skip a charger and do a 300 mile leg then yes, it will take me 30 to 40 minutes to get enough juice into the truck to make that distance. However, if I am only going 150 miles to the next charger then charging will only take me 20 minutes, just like the Taycan. Picture below shows what the Chevy truck will onboard in 20 minutes at an Electrify America charger. I usually average 1.8kWh per mile doing 75mph in the truck, so in a long distance race between the new Taycan and the Chevy Silverado they would be neck and neck.

I just completed a Geneva (CH) to Cambridge (UK) round trip, circa 1000 km each way.
Used Ionity chargers only and the car and charging stations worked perfectly, some reaching 250kwh.
Innodrive on the long French autoroute was a welcome assistance when cruising silently at 130kmh.
My first leg started with full 3 phase charging at home.
Pictures attached to show the availability and capability of Ionity chargers in France....
No road trip complaints from this driver.

You have no idea how jealous USA owners of CCS cars are of your European charging system. 2,000 km of road trip driving without an issue is just a dream here.

Taycan will always win. It’s all about how you arrive. In a classy sexy Porsche or in an Ugly truck?

Lucky for me I have options - if the company is right then I take the Taycan. If I need to bring a lot of crap with on the road trip, then I take the ugly truck.

Either way, I win.

Based on what you told me earlier about the capabilities of your Silverado EV, it is an impressive vehicle. And you prefer it to Rivian, right?

Quoted for emphasis (as the saying goes).
This test is a fun analytical exercise, but otherwise an utter waste of time for the test team (although granted the opportunity cost of time for such social media influencers is probably quite low).
Note also that the Taycan results differential for 1 vs 2 is trivial compared to the typical time suck at an ostensible 350kW EA.

Can I try to convey some idea of our jealousy?
(It's *THIS* big! No, actually, way bigger than that, sigh...)

In the past month I have done a Denver to Salt Lake and back road trip, and then a run from Denver to Scottsdale to Vegas and back to Denver. By my math, that is over 5,000KM of road trip driving in the past month in a CCS enabled vehicle.

I never waited one second for a fully functional Electrify America charger in any of the 5 states I charged in.

The bummer for you is that you live in a part of the country that elects public officials who equate electric cars with Satan, and reject NEVI dollars designated to expand charging infrastructure. What you perceive as a dream is actually reality in the Rocky Mountain west.

Full moon at dawn in western Arizona while taking the back way into St. George, UT.

I thought you might have a problem with starting out at a functioning 350 kW charger. I know I did. That is a rare sighting out in the wild. The test was interesting but worthless for proving any CCS car us a road trip champ.

That test is the CCS1 version of the classic economics joke (which like all economics jokes, isn't actually humorous, but rather is intended to illustrative a serious analytical point):
