I visited my local dealer today. I was having the homelink software updated as the new PCM update left my garage door home link non functional. Easy fix. While there service advisor said they had just done the brakes on a Taycan costing the owner 12k. He also reminded me that there is a recommended 6 year brake pad replacement. .

I was sticker shocked. My car is 3 years old with lots of pad thickness left.

I’m assuming this is a use your common sense when the time comes, if it needs to be done ?

I’m thinking they are talking replacing rotors as well as the pads for this expense?

thanks for your insight,

M

I’ve also started to see talk of insane brake prices. My understanding regarding the 6 year “recommended” replacement of the pads is that at 6 years you’ll be out of warranty so just use common sense if they need to be replaced.
Being that Taycan has one of the strongest regens on the road, more than 4x stronger than Tesla, which already basically have lifetime brakes, I cannot fathom any reason the Taycan brakes wouldn’t also last the life of the vehicle unless you’re tracking it

I agree. My Polestar 2 is still using the original pads after 144.000km and a very sporty driving style.

The Taycan US maintenance booklet on page 6 states the brake pads are to be replaced every 6 years. When ordering my 2020 4 S I stayed with the steel brakes after pricing the PCCB parts. I never considered specifying the carbon ceramic brakes. My car uses Brembo brakes typically found on Porsche cars & SUVs. I'm used to working on them. The closed caliper design requires caliper removal to change the pads.

$12K sounds like more than just the pads at the 6 year interval. Pads, even on the Turbo S with PCCB, are about $1,000 for parts. Even with Porsche labor prices, I don't think a pad brake job should run much more than $2,000.

12 k is probably the cost of replacing the PSCB discs? I have a feeling that is what is done at the inspection at 6 years?

Porsche dealers needs to get revenue from somewhere!

Probably but that would mean the discs were either really worn down/damaged or that dealership really took advantage of that customer by doing the discs as well. Both PSCB and PCCB rotors are pretty much lifetime unless you track your car. Even the service at 6 years states "brake pads" and not "brake pads and rotors". The 6 year service on the pads is also a time thing and not a wear thing—you can roll in with seemingly unused pads at 6 years and the recommendation would be to replace them because of time.

Unfortunately, the Pads for PCBS rotors cost $900. Then it may cost $1500 labor included. Personality I will not replace the pads at 6 years anniversary unless you are tracking the car.

Do you have iron, PSCB or PCCBs? They are drastically different costs.

$12k sounds like PSCB rotor and pads replacement. If iron, rotor and pads should only be about $3k + labor.

PSCBs and PCCBs rotors should be close to a "lifetime" part, I think 10+ years and 100k miles. Pad changes at around 5 year marks.

Is it mandatory to replace pads when 6 yrs old in order to keep your warranty / porsche approved?
Or is it recommended to change....?

Does someone know the details / part numbers which pads exactly are used for the PCCB set up? (Pads suitable for the CC brakes), front / rear. Are these Brenbo pads?

As perhaps the same pads can be purchased without a "Porsche stamp" and let it be installed by an independent car shop....with proof op replacement I guess keeping P warranty should not be at stake!?

When six years rolls around I'll likely replace the pads and iron rotors on my 4S myself and save the receipts for posterity.
