The cells are CATL which is probably the gold standard. CATL has 40%+ gloabl market share and I can't recall a major issue with their cells. LG had issues with Chevy & Porsche. Sunwoda with Volvo/Zeekr. SK with VW.
Panasonic?

That's excellent news, imagine the utopia : J1.1 Taycan retrofitted +50% autonomy, problem solved :)
Thats exactly what we are aiming for in X years! Turn this one into a classic with new battery every so many years!

I unfortunately think the cars will take a huge nose dive in price after the 8 year battery warranty is up. These will be 20k cars no question at the 10 year mark. Unfortunately the battery isn’t the only problem. Until we get Indy shops Porsche is only going to hurt the used values as you are stuck with dealer pricing. Everything on taycan is ridiculously expensive to repair and are quite common. Among these are High voltage onboard chargers 5-7k, & inverters 20-30k. Had two separate taycans both riddled with problems. First one had 5 high voltage chargers replaced and both inverters. Second one had one high voltage charger and the rear inverter. This is just a small amount of things that were repaired on these cars. Until repair prices come down prices will continue to tank.

Even with all my problems I still loved the car it’s just a shame it’s gotten to this.

Interstingly enough the cost is not that bad following the calculation i made prior to purchasing my car.
we were in the market for new EV cars. Ended up with this 2022 Taycan.

Calculating from there, there really isnt a diffence between a new Lexus RZ and a 4-year old taycan 4s. And just a small difference with f/i the Toyota CHR+.
considered price, depreciation, insurance, roadtaxes, electricityconsumption, regular maintenance. Did not calculate any unregular maintenance since it’s unplannable.

of course this car is not new and i calculated it for 11 years versus 15 years of ownership on a new car.
In general I consider us lucky thst we can buy extended warranty for 15 years (exept battery) and hope - as with any car I owned - that she will run smooth for a long long time.

I'd be less worried about replacing the battery, and more about our cars no longer being able to connect to Porsche connected services.

Even though I am quite sure most batteries will hold well, these can anyway be replaced if needed.

But connectivity is a whole different animal. Two limiting factors there:
  • On one hand, our cars rely completely on whatever horizon Porsche has decided on to support connected services for our cars.
  • On the other hand, 4G/LTE will not be there forever. Early BMW i3 with 3G connectivity are no longer connected in many parts of the world due to 3G being phased out there. Same will eventually occur with 4G.
Some might not care about it, but I personally think that losing connected services will be a blow to the user experience of the car.

I'm quite sure there will be hackers who can work around this. Just like how we keep vintage cars alive today, in future, these 1st gen EVs will be "vintage" cars and there will be enthusiasts and aftermarket providers who will also maintain these.

Our J1.1 batteries are under a fire/safety recall that required that we all have special battery monitoring software. If that software detects a failing module it limits the car to 80% SOC and directs the owner to visit the workshop. What do we think happens when that message pops up after the 8-year warranty expires? Does Porsche honor the recall and fix the battery?
