[North American] - Home EV charging for the power limited existing home residential user…

sometimes despite people's wishes and goals one can not achieve optimal when it comes to retrofitting an existing home…this is often the case for existing residential users adding EV charging to their existing North American home.

the ideal setup for any aspiring EV owner is to ad a new dedicated 240V circuit to their garage to provide awesome and plentiful electrons to their new shiny EV. This is sometimes however thwarted by building codes that require dedicated 240V circuit to not overwhelm the "main breaker's" rating in conjunction with other loads already allocated in the panel (ovens, electric dryers, water heaters, stoves, hot tubs, air conditioning, etc…)

It might be impossible to add a 40/50/60 amp 240V circuit/breaker to an existing 100 or 125 amp main breaker panel due to electrical load requirements (the rules are complicated and subject to interpretation by both your electrician and building inspector - consult your local building professionals for their best advice).

When you simply can not add a new 240V circuit to your existing panel options become either limited or deeply expensive to upgrade the panel to have enough excess total capacity to host the new 40/50/60 amp circuit for your EV charger…

well recently I learned there is a viable alternative EVSE that has a secret power - and if you install this EVSE it will _PASS_ building code inspection…and may avoid the need to upgrade your existing panel - saving potentially thousands of US $$$$'s

Emporia's EVSE's are "smart" - i.e. they are load aware. When you install an Emporia EVSE in your home you also install a "load sensor/meter" that monitors your home's total electrical power draw - and it also knows your main breaker's total capacity. The emporia EVSE is therefore smart enough to reduce/remove it's load from the home's total electrical usage during "high demand" periods of time (your using your oven, electrical dryer, and water heaters all at the same time)

if the Emporia EVSE sense high demand it will simply reduce/remove it's demand from the equation (meaning your EV will not charge or charge more slowly) and once it "sees" that total load in the home is reduced it can go back to providing full power during 'low demand' periods of time - thereby not overwhelming your home's total capacity…the Emporia EVSE will dynamically adjust it's load during EV charging sessions to avoid overloading your main panel…but provide full power during "idle" periods of time when your homes total demand is lower (like when you're sleeping).

if you can't add a 40/50/60 amp 240V volt circuit to your existing home residential main panel due to capacity limitation - consider consulting with an Emporia trained electrician - they should be able to add a high capacity circuit and install the Emporia EVSE and this could avoid the need for an expensive/complex capacity upgrade of your existing main panel…

this was _NOT_ a paid announcement - just a very interesting option for potential EV owners that don't want to sink thousands of $$$ into a home main panel capacity upgrade…

why did I post this? Well I simply love a "better mouse trap" and feel people and companies that solve actual problems should be rewarded!!!

solutions like this are going to be necessary for EV adoption to continue - not everyone can upgrade their main panel to accommodate a home EV charger - this may be a solution for those existing homes.

Creative solution focused alternatives like the one Emporia has developed are exactly the alternatives we require to allow a wide range of choices…

so simply - I'm making people aware of a potentially "better" product - and they can determine for themselves if it solves a problem…

but yeah - in this case Emporia does have a better "mouse trap" and if you're capacity limited in your home's existing main panel - they may have the solution you've been looking for!!

The Emporia Energy chargers max out at 48A. I’d be more impressed if they could deliver the full 80A capacity, like the Porsche charger does.

The Emporia Energy chargers max out at 48A. I’d be more impressed if they could deliver the full 80A capacity, like the Porsche charger does.
With newer Taycans there is no point going beyond 48amp since they only come with an 11kW AC charger, and additionally Porsche seems to have artificially limited them to 40amp charge rate.

How is this different from any other EVSE? I have an Andersen and a Zappi. Both have a setting for my house incoming fuse limit and both throttle back the charge if it gets close. This is just standard - at least in the UK I think.

this is uncommon in North America - most EVSE just run "static" full load - load adjusting/aware devices/appliances are not a "thing" in North America - but that's changing.

The load sensing option you described is a solid workaround for homes that cannot handle a full 60 amp circuit. I had a similar issue with my 100 amp panel and went with Wolf River Electric for the install. They looked at my panel, recommended a load management system, and installed a hardwired charger that adjusts its draw based on the rest of the house. Cost was reasonable and I did not need a panel upgrade.

the need for a "panel" upgrade is the the major cost variable when it comes to adding a dedicated circuit for a residential EVSE (home EV charger) - buying a "smart" EVSE that has load monitoring/adjusting is a great alternative - and for the most part you end up charging at "full speed" because you can schedule the EV charging to take place when your home is not making major demands on your power (i.e. while you're asleep)…

_ANY_ of the home EVSE's that can be installed with load monitoring/adjusting should be seriously considered…

the flip side of this coin however is - great excuse to get a new panel - but that tends to be very very costly…
