sometimes despite people's wishes and goals one can not achieve optimal when it comes to retrofitting an existing home…this is often the case for existing residential users adding EV charging to their existing North American home.
the ideal setup for any aspiring EV owner is to ad a new dedicated 240V circuit to their garage to provide awesome and plentiful electrons to their new shiny EV. This is sometimes however thwarted by building codes that require dedicated 240V circuit to not overwhelm the "main breaker's" rating in conjunction with other loads already allocated in the panel (ovens, electric dryers, water heaters, stoves, hot tubs, air conditioning, etc…)
It might be impossible to add a 40/50/60 amp 240V circuit/breaker to an existing 100 or 125 amp main breaker panel due to electrical load requirements (the rules are complicated and subject to interpretation by both your electrician and building inspector - consult your local building professionals for their best advice).
When you simply can not add a new 240V circuit to your existing panel options become either limited or deeply expensive to upgrade the panel to have enough excess total capacity to host the new 40/50/60 amp circuit for your EV charger…
well recently I learned there is a viable alternative EVSE that has a secret power - and if you install this EVSE it will _PASS_ building code inspection…and may avoid the need to upgrade your existing panel - saving potentially thousands of US $$$$'s

Emporia's EVSE's are "smart" - i.e. they are load aware. When you install an Emporia EVSE in your home you also install a "load sensor/meter" that monitors your home's total electrical power draw - and it also knows your main breaker's total capacity. The emporia EVSE is therefore smart enough to reduce/remove it's load from the home's total electrical usage during "high demand" periods of time (your using your oven, electrical dryer, and water heaters all at the same time)
if the Emporia EVSE sense high demand it will simply reduce/remove it's demand from the equation (meaning your EV will not charge or charge more slowly) and once it "sees" that total load in the home is reduced it can go back to providing full power during 'low demand' periods of time - thereby not overwhelming your home's total capacity…the Emporia EVSE will dynamically adjust it's load during EV charging sessions to avoid overloading your main panel…but provide full power during "idle" periods of time when your homes total demand is lower (like when you're sleeping).
