Hi all,

A couple of years ago my car blew the onboard 22kw charger which bricked the car in its entirety. An updated version was fitted and all has been sweetness and light ever since (comparatively - as an aside, my wife’s Italian electric car which is only a few months younger than mine has had one warranty visit compared to over twenty for my “reliable” German vehicle!).

However, over the last few days the car has steadfastly refused to accept an AC charge on either port. I’ve tried multiple EVSEs to make sure it wasn’t our Ohme Home Pro at fault, although it happily charges the Fiat so it was unlikely to be the culprit.

This time, though, it’s throwing no error messages in the right tube and, other than the “charging not possible” on the lower centre screen, and it not actually charging, there’s no sense it knows there’s a technical fault in the vehicle somewhere.

It continues to charge just fine on DC (and as the majority of my charging is done on such chargers this is quite the relief, although the irritation of sitting 8 miles from my house on an Ionity charger on my way home from work when I could be in the house with a glass of claret is profound, if assuredly a first world problem!) so I’ve been able to keep using it.

I’m abandoning it to Porsche’s tender mercies on Monday for them to look at when they can as I’m a little spooked at the possibility that the DC charging will follow suit very shortly (based on my experience of 2 years ago) and leave me stuck. This would be particularly problematic if it bricks itself at work, where extracting it from the multi-storey car park would be a thing of incalculable aggravation for all concerned, but I wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar “benign” failure with the AC charging and, if so, what it proved to be.

Thanks!

I had a quite similar problem 1 year and a half ago.
It refused to charge (both sides) on AC (but worked on DC) on 2 different networks. I could however charge it at the office where i don't need a charging card. Another parameter : it was cold, below zero temperatures.
I could not figure out if it was due to the temperature (?) or a connection issue between the car and the networks.
After a couple of weeks, it went back to normal ....

I learned the other day a "reset" procedure, told by Porsche assistance.
- exit the car. open driver door. then close it
- press twice the lock button on the remote, not too fast. That will deactivate all electric systems
- wait 10 to 15mn
- enter the car from the passenger door, sit and close the passenger door
- press and hold the start button for 10 sec.

Thank you for that, I’m giving that a whirl right now. Fingers crossed!

I had exactly the same experience the first day of owning the car. My 22kw AC charger was dead and had to be replaced. Took them about 8 working days, Porsche Nottingham.

Gave that a whirl, sadly no luck. Off to the OPC she goes!

My 2023 GTS has been with the dealer in Swindon with exactly this issue. My Buzz charges on the Porsche and Ohme chargers perfectly but not the Taycan. Porsche couldn't reproduce the issue themselves so sent me back home only for it to do exactly the same. Took it back in and the technician tried again and blew the onboard circuitry so they're now awaiting a part from Germany. My loan Taycan is currently charging fine on both chargers.

According to the OPC, it’s blown the onboard 22kw charger again (this one being the allegedly upgraded version). Ho hum.

Our Fiat 500 EV has been flawless too.

Having had 5 x 22kW chargers over the years – they do seem to be more unreliable than the 11kW. I think it is interesting that 22kW is currently not an option on the next generation of Taycan – though Porsche has indicated that it will be available in the future.

Yup, were I to go for a gen 2 Taycan, I wouldn’t specify the option again. It’s been of little use relatively speaking and similarly little reliability.

Fair play to Norwich OPC, they didn’t have space in the workshop but were happy for me to drop it off and leave it with them, which I did on Monday first thing. I collected the car early yesterday morning with a new 22kw charger fitted, cleaned and fully charged. Cannot fault the service or the effort they put in for me there.

I had forgotten about this one, which is vaguely on topic.....

My car has the 11kw charger, but it repeatedly failed to charge on the drivers side only. Red error after plugging in.

I usually charge on the passenger side (home) and barely ever use DC charging, so it wasn't too big an issue.

But when it went in for some other failure / recall, I flagged it up.

They said they replaced the Port as it was faulty.

The AC home charging port is driver’s side for RHD. Is your car LHD?
