@thomasnhyde Has your Taycan been able to be started and driven off the ferry? Was the inability to start caused by tracking system or something else?

When the “transport mode” setting expired (after ten hours), it was back to normal as if nothing had happened. The issue was it went through two 10hr brick cycles with a window to disembark the car at Portsmouth of 1.5hr, hence it had three return trips to France. It’s off the ship now, thankfully.

Thank God we don't have this in North America.

Is this package required in Europe? For all cars?

It is part of the Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (PVTS) which is a collection of security things and is available in most markets including US

It is a subscription based service and entirely optional. Each car is shipped with 2 tracker fobs which once activated form part of the PVTS package. Note that all Porsche cars offer this service and not limited to the Taycan.

PVTS Transport Mode is not something you need to use. When traveling at sea with the car is not a use case I'd use this feature and would simply disable the inclinations sensor to prevent the alarm going off.

Transporting the car by container, yes probably. Transporting the car by flatbed truck, possibly but disabling the inclination sensor would suffice

None of this explains some of the situations encountered by some above.

PVTS is a great product and can reduce insurance premiums to boot.

And on the EuroTunnel? Seems equivalent to ”transporting the car by container”. I understood that transport mode is needed whenever the car’s moves significantly (distance, speed) without the car being powered up.

Yep. Though full GSM/4G coverage in the tunnel might help things along connectivity wise. FWIW, I've never had any of the challenges with PVTS+ on ferries that are described in this thread.

All insurance companies in Ireland that insure a Taycan (not many – its not a big market) require an active PVTS+ subscription and look for proof yearly. The one time I forgot to activate transport mode on a ferry, it triggered a call from the tracking centre within 50 meters of leave the port.

Not sure what's up with the OPs issue and why it differers so much from mine and others experiences. Is it new behaviour, new hardware or just a glitch? No clue. I will continue to use the service, continue to set transport mode and will continue to set it for longer than the timetabled ferry crossing times (margin of safety) and expect to be able to drive off each ferry with no issues.

I hope that remains true!

I used Transport mode twice in the past week. Both times I set it for 2 hours despite the crossing being 40 mins. After 40 mins I just got in and drove off.

my understanding is that the mode is just for disabling security alerts rather than disabling the car itself
Can you just leave the Vodafone fob in the car to avoid security issues? On a ferry the car won’t be stolen obviously.

This is all new to me. Do you set the transport mode in the dash or via the Porsche app.

I don't think so – because this is a specific monitoring of a car that is physically detected to be moving – but it's not on. The presence of the fob doesn't override that.

^^ what he said. It's more the fact that the car is physically moving without being driven that triggers the alert as far as I understand

You set it via the Porsche App. Or you can also ring the tracking centre and get them to do it for you. 99% of the time, I do it via the app.

There is a limit via the app of a maximum of 10 hours to set the mode. When I take a ferry from Ireland to France – it's 18 hours and for that I have to ring them.

They are super friendly and helpful – amazingly so.

The anti theft package is standard in Belgium on the CT. My insurance doesn’t require. My SA asked if I wanted it active but he advised against it. Maybe for this reason. And another: they may retrieve your stolen car after a week and most people would prefer just to have a new one when its stolen.
I did the opposite and got a tracker. My thinking being if it is stolen I would have an 18+ month wait. Everything can be made as good as new if returned. Within in reason mind.

Nonsense. It's a short journey and you are travelling with.

Your choice but no need for it.

Good thing about electric cars is you can keep them powered up in the Chunnel.

Have you actually used the channel tunnel crossing without enabling this mode in PTVS+? I’d much rather not have to use it, but my experience with PTVS+ is that Vodafone calls you with any kind of anomaly.
