Just realised I really have no idea on what type of Etiquette there is for using a charging point while out and about.

The only one I would assume so far is that once you know you car is charged up, move straight off the point.

- Are you supposed to remain with the car whilst charging, or can you go for a wee stop / coffee break?
- How long should you stay on a point if they are taking a while if you see people waiting?

Anything else I haven't thought of?

Thanks

Common sense.

You don't need to sit in your car. You can run an errand.

Your choice how long you stay, but most (higher speed) charge points charge a high flat fee if your charging session lasts longer than an hour, and continues charging that fee in increments the longer you stay. That is there to discourage people from leaving their car for hours, even after it's fully charged.

If other people are waiting they will usually communicate with you. If someone needs to get somewhere urgently, they will ask if they can quickly top up their car for 15-20 minutes. If that doesn't inconvenience you, then let them use it.

The same is true if you find yourself in that scenario.

It is also illegal for ICE cars to park in charging point bays.

Many drivers in busy car parks - where you will often find charging points - are oblivious to this, and it can be annoying if you need to charge and some moron has parked their ICE car in the bay.

Be polite and tell them to move their car/the rules if/when they return.

No need to hang about but only charge to a level that you genuinely need for that day. Keep it to 85% max as the additional 15% will take disproportionately longer for little gain.

If the stalls are plentiful (unlikely) then less pressure for taking your time but if busy then typically volt and bolt with enough charge rather than a complete one.

Note that some of the EVSE will charge you 'charge time' in addition to KW to 'penalise' folk who take too long.
