My battery is back from getting some cells replaced from the recall. Service guy tells me they need to drain the battery from 100% twice to evaluate. He asked if the manager can take my car home for a few days so his commute will drain the battery

Is this standard? Seems like a weird request unless there isn’t a more effective way to check the battery?

picture added to explain why I find this is odd…

Not standard at all. Pretty sure there is a specific procedure to follow for discharge. At my dealer in Switzerland, I witnessed the battery going from 100% to almost 0% in like 10 mins in via app refresh... Not quire sure how they did it, but for sure they did not drive it to the boss's home

What if he crashes it? What if the drives over a pothole? What if he gets a 3mm dent on the bottom of the protection plate underneath the car, resulting in the car being tottaled? Nah...

what if it’s leased for X number of miles? What if it’s insured for X number of miles? Etc etc. Are they gonna reimburse you for all this? ?

Two full charges seems excessive; when I had my battery recall done they needed to drive the car, but they told me 100 miles. I snooped on their drive with the app and did about 90. They did leave the car parked overnight at the managers house. I got it back a couple of days later.

I had exactly this for our new Mini EV after some odd issues and a major investigation. I had to let the service manager drive it for a week to do two full cycles on the battery. Mini HQ wanted 500 miles driven and two full cycles. I wasn’t happy at all having 500 miles adding to the Odo of a brand new car but they insisted on following “process”

I guess you could pay dealer service rates to have someone drive your car until the battery is depleted. Shouldn’t be any more than a $1000 or so.

I disagree with everyone else in here... first of all PIWIS provides Software-Controlled Discharge for maintenance, while in maintenance mode, which brings the voltage down to a safe state. Even if they don't have PIWIS, they could use a HV Battery Load Resistor to discharge the battery for maitenance.

Driving the car to discharge the battery is how a dealership that is not equiped for dealing with electric cars would do it.
My 2 cents

This is very common …. At least here in the U.S. and and in two separate porsche dealers in SoCal that is what they have done with my car.
Battery load banks do not simulate driving the car, they simply discharge. I spent a few years as part of a team building an EV ground up (not personal transportation) and other than running the vehicle through a rolling road simulator (which we also had) …. Driving it through normal load conditions is the way.

You probably have a good config and he likes the idea of going home with a beautiful car, enjoy it with a family and, show the kids a new toy ? just make sure to ask him not to change their diapers in the back seat.
Ok jokes a side, if I were you I wouldn’t let anyone driving my car for that long. 2 full charges, that’s 800 km! If they don’t have an alternative solution, just take back your car for a few days and do what the manager is supposed to do.
