I just had my ev installed at home. The installer said he has installed 40 amp charger. I did my first charge and it was charging at 8.5 kWh and 0.6 km a minute. When I did some research it shows that a 40 amp should have 9.6kw with 240 volts.
When I asked my ev installer he said the 40 amp output is regulated at 80 percent hence the lower kw. Is that right?

I'm not sure about Canadian regulations, but in the U.S. the requirement is that the breaker in the electrical panel should be sized such that it can deliver 100% of the rated current for peak loads and 80% of the rated current for sustained loads. EV charging represents sustained loads, so to get 40A charging into your EV the breaker should be rated at 50A.

He installed a 50 amp circuit breaker. 50 * 0.8 = 40 amps available. And 240V * 40A / 1000 = 9.6kW. But there are other factors like temperature and battery state, which is regulated by the car's charging ability. So at 8.5 KWh, it seems like it's working fine.

8.5 is approximately correct after losses. The 9.6 is at the EVSE. The battery will see less.

The 80% is 40A relative to the 50A branch circuit (breaker, wire, and receptacle).

Just had my NEMA1450 installed last week, similarly 50A circuit breaker. Really look forward to bring the car home and see how it goes. The gas price @Toronto today just hit another record high,
Can’t wait…
