Fitcamx dashcam installation

I just installed this in about 1 hour taking my time. The front cover was easy when you rotate the assembly counterclockwise to detach. That gives you easy access to pull the sides of the front cover and pull that off. The most time consuming step was installing the middle cover. I spent 30 minutes trying to fit stuff under that cover to figure out that all those wire belong up top (don't try to cram behind the middle cover). I could have finished in 20 minutes if I had known that previously.

With regards to the middle cover, if it doesn't attach to the front piece (camera), you just need to push them together, squeezing the middle cover along the sides so it attaches properly to the camera. It will sit flush, you just need to give it a nudge.

Picture quality looks good, and the unit looks factory. I also bought the polarized lens cover, which fixes the reflection issue.

Did you try the 400gb microsd? According to their website, the camera can only handle up to 128gb. Curious if anyone is successfully using over a 128gb microsd.

I got both a 256GB and 512GB card to work but on a different vehicle. But I am pretty sure the camera/brain is the same on all their units.

Installed today, pretty straightforward with a bit of patience, and all done form the driver seat .The middle trim piece was tricky to fit back but one you tuck the wide connector up into the roof , it clips in ok .

Also installed today. That middle piece... ?. Also trying to figure out running the cable to the rear camera. Ran it through most of the trim seams, but right after the rear door I lost the plot a little (and ran out of time).

I can only echo what everybody else has said on here. It’s really easy to take apart, fit but getting that middle piece aligned is next to impossible. The whole installation took around 2 hours. This was 15 minutes to take apart, reinstall and connect everything up. Nearly 2 hours of trying to align that middle piece. I still don’t have it flush, I just will not sit aligned with the camera at all, but it’s close enough. It definitely doesn’t connect to the middle piece but I can’t without breaking something get it any closer - probably a 5mm gap but you can’t see any wires.

Tried stuffing the wires everywhere, but it will not clip on. Tried clipping in bottom first and tilting up as well as trying to shove forward, but will not budge with a 1" gap.

Any advice from those who have struggled this fight ( I did review previous 15 pages). Emailed support.

I feel your pain. Its all pretty simple until that last middle trim piece - mine doesn't look great and the clips on the middle section have bent making it even more impossible to clip back together.

If you find a solution please let me know - I ended up just leaving it and pretending I can't see it (but I can).

I had to detatch extra wire anchors farther aft and stuff / doubleback the new wiring above and around the other wiring to ensure enough clearance to the cover and to find enough room to run the new longer wires. Even with that it still didn't want to go back in place. Took some focus on the trim piece tabs to make sure nothing was blocking those. Then it took a lot more force than I was comfortable with pre-30min of frustration and awkward body positions. It was such a long trial & error process I unfortunately did not grab a picture of the routing that finally worked.

After more work, got the middle trim piece on, but it still does not fit on cleanly and has a small gap, as in many of the pics from others. The breakthrough was pushing the lower cable connector block (mirror power) up and away - it swings downward easily. Once that was done the trim part fit on better but could not fit cleanly leaving a gap. Good enough for now, as the unit does work.

This is my first post on this site. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to all of you who have shared your experiences - you have been a huge help to me.

I was able to install the FitCamX today. After reading these posts, I was prepared for a lot of difficulty. However, my experience was actually not too bad. In my case, I found that the wiring from the FitCamX harness was preventing the middle trim piece from being placed and by tucking the harness perpendicularly up above the windshield wiper wires, there was enough space to fit the pieces together nicely. I apologize for not taking pictures to share, but I wanted to offer encouragement that if you try it, you might get lucky as well.

One other thing to note is that in the process I I also added a mirror tap to the other (8 pin?) harness based on other posts on this site and hardwired the radar detector.

My next plan is to add an independent dash cam facing out the rear window, plugged into the trunk 12V. I think the wiring won't be too difficult, although I can't find much information from others who have done it this way.

I hope that sharing my experience and these thoughts is helpful in some way. Thank you all for your invaluable posts!

I also used tips from this thread to install my fitcamx in about 40 minutes about 2 months ago. I was surprised how hard it was to twist off the mirror, other than that I just took my time while pausing the youtube tutorial video after each step.

I also put a Garmin mini 2 in the back window for a rear facing camera. Plugs into the 12 volt outlet in the truck and super easy to run the wire up and out by the top of the passenger seat. The wire tucks in easily around the trunk trim and rear window trim. The camera is very small and hardly noticeable. 10 minute job tops.

Thank you for those thoughts - I'm glad it also went well for you. Of note, I decided against taking off the mirror. The space is a little tighter with it left in place, but I was able to get the harness unplugged and re-attached without removing the mirror, so I went with it.

Good to know about the Garmin install - the mini 2 seems like a good option for this location.

@JTZen Are you able to successfully use the FitCamX and radar detector (via mirror tap) off the rearview mirror circuit? I have all the parts, but another posting discouraged me from doing both. It would be good to have a data point of success.

@MidwestPCar - I haven't had any issues so far. TBH, I connected my phone to the camera once after setup and it was working and then I've forgotten about it since. Since there's no screen, there's no obvious indication whether it's working. It crossed my mind a few days ago that I should check. If I do and there's a problem, I'll let you know, but right now, everything seems fine and the radar detector is working pretty well. I was concerned about the insulated glass, so I used an aftermarket stick-on mount from ebay to get it up as high and tight to the mirror as possible. It still gets KA alerts. I basically haven't heard any K or X band ones but I'm not sure if that's just the good filtering (Uniden R8) or the glass. Hope this helps and good luck! (Not sure if it's new to you - but it's by FAR the best vehicle I've ever owned. Nearly perfect. Hope you're enjoying yours.)
