Hi.
I'm looking for a used Taycan 4 or 4S with rear wheel steering for driving in Europe. I understand that there were some major upgrades in year 2023 and 2025 regarding range and high speed charging.
My basic requirement is that it can easily drive for 2-3 hours with charging stops around 15-20 min north and south in Europe. My home country is Denmark. So I look for models from year 2023 and onwards. But can I safely look to earlier models?
Thanks in advance

I don't think rear wheel steering is a limitation to 2023 and later. I went through a search for a Taycan 4S recently and was mainly looking at 2022 and 2021 cars. While rear wheel steering wasn't a priority for me—it's a nice-to-have—I did see U.S. market cars with that option. I believe it might have been included in the performance package as well. I think a more important option is Performance Battery Plus, if you want to drive for 2 - 3 hours without a stop. Unless you drive in Sport/Sport+ (assuming Sport Chrono option) like a maniac, your drive time should be fine. For reference, I ended up with a 2021 Taycan 4S, which I drove 450 - 500 miles home. This took me two stops, with a total charge time of 45 minutes. Actual travel time was about 8+ hours because it took me longer to eat than charge at one of the stops.

Thanks. I forgot to say performance plus battery is a must, yes. I think you can get rear wheel steering for all year models, so I should maybe not have brought that up. So the question is really is it a stretch to expect to drive for 3 hours and charge for max 20 min in year models 2020-2022?

There was no improvement for MY23 that hasn't been cascaded to the previous MY thru a major workshop upgrade:

Driving 3 hours on highways with a 2022 Taycan 4S with Performance Plus is not possible, as long as you drive the normal speed (120/140 km/h). But you can drive 2 hours and spend less than 15 min at the charging station which is more than acceptable. I do that pretty often. Last time last week end with a 800 km round trip.
In Europe, you won’t spend more than 20 min at a charging station from 10% to 80%.

Driving 3 hours on roads (70-100 km/h) is not a stretch, it’s a given.

Pretty simple really - the facelift Taycan (MY25) or J1.2 introduced a larger battery with different chemistry which provided additional range and the potential for faster charging.

Older cars depending on mileage will have reduced range predicated on the state of health (SOH) of the battery in additionto less usablebatterycapacity.

Most variants have PB+ but don't purchase one that doesn't.

I have a 2021 4 Cross Turismo with rear wheel steering and can easily drive 2-3 hours (it has the performance battery).

The exception is when I was driving in the polar vortex temperatures negative 10 Fahrenheit. Then I was only getting one and a half to 2 hours. That said, I had literally just bought the car a few days earlier and hadn't discovered range mode and was driving for 8 to 10 hours a day in a part of the country where there weren't many chargers, so is being extra conservative.

I've attached a photo of the best mileage. The car says that it has in the springtime.

Did you drive your 2021 model on highways fast or regular rodes steady or mixed to obtain this range?

I bought my car in Dec 2024. Picked it up in NJ in Jan. 25. Drive it from NJ to CO (about 3k miles) at speed, so 80-100 mph. That was through the polar vortex with -10 F. I got about 1.5 to 2hrs, but again, was conservative: hadn't figured out how to drive range mode, chargers were few and far between, etc.

Then next trip was from CO to Zion and Moab UT. Tempatures ranged from cold (drove through a blizzard via mountain passes via 9k fit elevation) and some warmer temperatures maybe 45 degrees F at the high. There I easily did 2 -2.5 hwy driving at 80-100 mph. That was the trip where I figured out range mode and could drive 3 hours at about 80-85mph. the problem was my bladder gave out before my battery, so I found myself taking it out of range mode and stopping sooner, charging for 5-10 min, going to the bathroom and getting back on the road.

When I'm not doing long distance highway driving, I'm just carting my kid around in the city.

I've traveled over 6,000 miles in this car. My next trip is the first week of June, where I'll be putting nearly 2,000 miles on it. Denver, CO to Tuscon, AZ with stops along the way. I'll really try to experiment with range mode. But I'm confident that I can cover five hour drives starting the day at 100%, stopping to go to the bathroom twice (10 min charges) and stopping for lunch once (30+ charge.) But we'll see....LOL

keep in mind, most of my driving is U.S. West where charges are few and far between. This is the land of the gas guzzling pick up!

I'll report back.

Thanks - it sounds doable, regardless of others warning. Maybe also a matter of personal risk. A better route planner can set minimum level before charging and you should be able to prepare the battery for fast charging temperature using porsche connect for next charging station, have I heard?

Yes, before a long trip, I (now) use ABRP to plan it out, then I double check with PlugShare that they're good locations to charge. I'm also learning which ones are more reliable. (And which states. IN and MO SUCK, but CO and KS are excellent.)

And yes, you plug your route into the nav system and it will tell you where to charge and will precondition automatically. I think only once or twice I didn't do that and it wound up taking a long time. Good news was it was at a Tesla charger next to my hotel, so I unpacked and then came back and 45 min later it was fully charged.

Be careful with range estimates at 100% and in particular when the ambient temp is low.

My MY21 4S or MY23 both with PB+ never in 2 years reported more than 245 from new and 20K miles.

Switch the AC on and drive a gew short miles the range quickly drops.

Porsche Intelligent Range Manager PIRM is you friend and very accurate. Use it to plan journeys adding DC EVSEs as stopovers to automatically precondition the battery.

Note that MY20 - MY24 cars charge quickest when nearly empty and only for a short time. MY25s charge faster for longer.

Consumption data is a better metric for comparison 3.0 in 4S PB+ and 2.7 miles / kwh in GTS ST PB+. 83.9KwH available to use in previous facelift cars. This will give you a realistic measure of what to expect.

Shorter journeys the consumption can dramatically increase 2.0 or less in winter.
