Advice please

My car is in having its roof replaced, as part of the pre inspection report, they have noted that the entire inside rim of the rear right wheel has been damaged/scraped. (See video).

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation occur. The front right wheel is not damaged which is odd as one assumes to cause this level of damage you would have to run the inside of the wheel along a pavement for a prolonged period of time whilst also significantly mounting curb. I would therefore think that the front wheel would have also have been damaged.

I have owned the car for five months and have not at any time mounted a curb, or had an experience in the car where this level of damage was heard/noticed.

And any ideas of how this could've happened?

Thanks so much

While cleaning my car I purchased about 9 months ago I noticed the same on one of my rear tires. It appears totally cosmetic where the black paint was scraped off the inner edge.

Mine were scraped a bit from moving around (scraping) a bit on the shop floor (lying on the inner side) while switching wheels. Mine were cosmetic. Perhaps yours could have happened from been laid down when some work was done (e.g. to the brakes)

Sadly never had to take the wheels off

That's a very good point - it would explain I guess why only only wheel has been damaged but surely it would wouldn't have done the full circumference of the wheel

Looks like a stone or something got stuck somewhere.

Wouldn't have taken much at speed to do that.

I definitely didn’t do it so it had to have been the previous owner. When I get new tires and the wheel is off I’ll paint the scuffed area with black auto paint. You can’t see it unless you get under the car but painting it may prevent corrosion.

That kind of inner wheel rim damage can be caused by the process loading them onto and off of car transporter rigs, e.g., the car not being perfectly perpendicular to the fore/aft axis of the rig during that locating and unloading process. For example, if the transporter driver starts to turn the car while unloading before both the rear and the front wheels are completely on the ground. RWS can compound this issue.

It looks like carwash damage from the type of carwash where the tire rides in a curbed channel.

Have the same on my summer and winter wheels. Almost certain the car wash caused it. Dealer suggested the same cause. Nothing serious and just optical luckily.
