Need help with yet another charging question.
I have two identical chargers (both running same software version) at home and two electric cars - a 4S and my wife's Volvo (bear with me here).
Both cars have been set to charge between 00:30 and 05:30 when my electricity rate is at it cheapest.
The Volvo timer is simple and works a treat and the car charges perfectly between the allocated times.
The 4S is a pain and I have wrestled with Timers and Profiles (as well as Timers and Profiles at the same time) to control the charging, but for some reason whenever the car is plugged in, it immediately begins charging (yes - I have turned direct charging off as well as pre-heat/cool).
The charger has a timer function in the software and I have activated this also, but even though the charger itself is allocated to come alive between the 00:30 and 06:30 slot, the 4S overrides this and immediately calls for charge when plugged in. Of course the Volvo doesn't do this even when I de-activate the in car timer function and put it onto direct charging. It sits there and waits for the charger to come alive unlike its troublesome friend next to it.
I have tried both cars on both chargers and the 4S does the same thing on either the left or right charger.
Has anyone any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? The profiles appear correct and also appear correct in the App and in the car, as do the Timers but I cant stop the car immediately calling for charge as soon as its plugged in!!!

Let’s see a screenshot of the Charging ‘Profiles’ tab.

The mistake most people make in the timer profile is the percentage. They think this is the maximum charge, but in fact this is the minimum charge. They then set the minimum charge to 85% which is wrong. It should be set to 25% (or some other value).

The way the timer profile works is that whenever you plug your Taycan into a home charger, the car looks at its current state of charge and if it is below the minimum charge, it immediately starts charging until your state of charge is at the minimum setting. So, if you set the minimum charge to 85%, the car will charge to 85% before it stops charging.

If you set the minimum charge to 25%, when you plug in at home, if your current state of charge is below 25% the car will start charging until the state of charge reaches 25%. Then the car will stop charging until your regular night time schedule.

Thank you for trying to help.
I have attached two photos - one of the Timer which i have one set to the on time and one set to the off time. the second is the profile setting.
even if I de-activate the Timer and profile settings the car still tries to charge!!!

In ‘Charging’, there are three tabs: Overview, Timer, Profiles.

In Profiles, this is where you set the MINIMUM charge. Set it to 25%.

In Timer, this is where you set the daily schedule. Set ‘Ready to depart’ to the end of your cheap electric period (05:30). There are more complex schedules you can setup in case you want to get the car preconditioned before driving to work on a cold day, but what I’ve described are the basics.

Brilliant - thank you - I will try this tonight.
One detail - when I set the Timer "Ready to Depart" - do I set this to the recommended 85%?

Yes. This way the car is charged to 85% by the time your low cost period ends.

I had several problems trying to get my intelligent charger and the car to communicate effectively. In the end, the only way I could get it to work is to switch off all profiles and timers in the car and just use the timers or smart technology on the charger. This has worked fine for months. Good luck.

Good afternoon and thanks for this.
I did try that without success, but the Volvo worked perfectly like this so I know its definitely a setting in the 4S - so hopefully the timer and Profile advice I've had today will work!!

On the Timer tab turn off the first timer otherwise it will try and complete the charging by 00.30

On the ready by 05.30 Timer also set the soc you want to reach eg 85%

On the Profile tab set the Minimum charge to 25% Remember if the soc is below 25% when you plug in the car will immediately start charging until it reaches 25%

You can avoid this by deleting the Profile. However the car will decide when to start charging to reach your desired soc by 05.30 which might be before 00.30 if the battery is low.

Agreed - I leave timing of charge to the Octopus Go integration with my Zappi wall box. I don't have any timers set but I have the general profile set to 75% and optimised charging (i.e. not using "preferred charging period" settings) which limits the charge to 75% max (despite the "minimum charge" label!).

The group is steering you in the right direction. Here are the specific changes you need to make:
1. On the Timer screen, delete the 00:30 timer.
2. Touch the 05:30 timer and set Repeat to On, select every day, ensure Charging is On, and the target charge slider set to 85%. Touch Confirm.
3. On the Profiles tab, touch the General profile and set the Minimum Charge slider to 25% and ensure the "Preferred Charging Period" is selected. Set the Start and End times to 00:30 and 5:30 AM to coincide with your preferred charging period. Touch Confirm.
4. On your home charging equipment, remove any time-based settings and let the car handle it.

Enjoy the drive. :like:

@Biggles: 2 questions for you to improve the help the forum members can give:
  • what electricity provider and tariff do you have?
  • what's your home charging equipment?
