The mission...280 mile round trip between SE Pennsylvania and JFK, same day, with three checked bags, two carry ons, a cooler for snacks, and three passengers.
First challenge...will it fit? Unfortunately I didn't think to take photos. Rear 60% seat back folded down allowed the largest checked bag to pretty much completely occupy the passenger cabin, with the cooler bag on the left rear floorboard. I'm 6'2", and I had no issues with my standard "comfort" seating position with the back seat in this configuration.
That left the full trunk area for the other two checked bags and one large duffel bag/backpack carry on. The final carry on bag fit snugly in the forward storage compartment.
The driving mode configuration: I don't like how range mode kills effective air conditioning, so I've set the Individual Mode to Normal chassis, Normal power, but full lowered setting, with no regeneration.
Winds were very light, from the west/southwest, so not much impact on range. Temperature was about 72º when we left, dropping to low 60's late on the return leg. No precipitation encountered, so overall pretty much ideal conditions. Tire pressures were within 2 p.s.i. of specified, though I had considered bumping them up 5 p.s.i. per corner, I decided not to. AC was operated in ECO mode on the way to JFK, but was completely off the last 40 miles of the return leg.
Acceleration was done judiciously, but with intent.
There was no tailgating of other drivers to minimize drag...except in the NY vicinity where that is the mandatory technique while navigating the hordes of barbarians there who inexplicably have access to motor vehicles.
When practical, the Adaptive Cruise Control was set at 75 on the way to JFK, and 85 on the way back...simply because I'd had enough of the ridiculous amount of traffic congestion in the NYC area. I also had planned to make a charging stop on the way home, because we almost never DCFC, and I still want to see a 270 KW charge rate...highest to date was about 200 KW the only time we DCFC'd the Taycan prior to this JFK mission.
We left at 2 pm, with the car freshly-charged at home to 100%.
^^^ That's the status upon arrival at JFK (photo taken just prior to departure). The trip timer seems to have started when I powered up in the garage to verify the Individual Mode settings were saved correctly. Miles traveled plus projected range indicates about 295 miles available in ideal conditions, with a fully-loaded car.
Actual + projected range dropped to 277 miles by the time I got to the charging station. This includes about 50 miles of 85 m.p.h. driving. I arrived at 13% SOC, plug & charge worked flawlessly, but it seems EA was throttling output at the 350KW dispenser to half rate, because the Taycan never got more than 175 KW, despite entering the charger as the destination to pre-condition the battery, and even selecting Sport Plus mode with the car powered on while charging.
Even at the reduced charge rate, by the time I finished using the restroom at the co-located Wal-Mart, and unsuccessfully looking for my preferred soft drink they can't seem to stock anymore, I returned to the car to find it was at 71% SOC in 21 minutes...not even enough time to sit down at a nearby restaurant to eat dinner.
Anyhow, after stopping for dinner, and sending back the undercooked chicken for remediation, I arrived home at 11:15 p.m. with the following round trip numbers:
I wasn't expecting the Taycan to perform this well on a 6 hour drive. I thought we'd have to take our e-tron to fit all the luggage, but we had no issues with the Taycan utility for this mission. I've read reports the Taycan tends to exceed EPA-rated range, but it's nice to experience it first hand...without having to resort to excessive efforts to extract range from the vehicle. I'm aware it will not perform this well in less optimal conditions.
