It's all just speculations, yours or mine. I work with automotive manufacturers, both legacy and newcomers like Tesla. While for Tesla adding a double tap on a remote could only take few weeks and be deployed over the air, legacy automakers have many processes, and many suppliers. Adding a double tap might involve multiple suppliers to modify firmware (which in turn requires RFEs, specs, quotes, budgeting, etc), then a bunch of impact evaluations, what about using the same double-tap on non-powered trunks (they share a lot of parts with cars across the price range), then safety evaluation (can it hurt anyone), all affected firmwares re-certification, etc, etc. Making changes during the design phase is also easier than after the platform is in production.
Yes but given the feature set has remained 'as is' since the Cayenne and Panamera had powered tailgates (many years ago) I think had Porsche / VW wanted to they would have made that miniscule step long before now but for whatever reason elected not to.

Since you think safety is the reason, how do you explain being able to close from inside of the car, but not from the key fob?

Simples - someone is in the vehicle and will be aware of a potential hazard should it arise

I would argue someone standing outside of the vehicle with a key fob has no less awareness of the the hazards around a closing trunk/tailgate, probably more.

Correct but the discussion is on remote closing i.e. not near by and potentially too far away to intervene if needed.

If you are that close either wiggle your foot or push the button on the trunk.

Keyfob has limited range. Not allowing it to close is inconsistent from safety point of view if you allow it from the inside, at least from my perspective. Again, just my point of view, I have never worked with Porsche engineering.

Actually it has impressive range and more than you might imagine.

Have you tried using your head as an antenna? Place the fob against your head and press the button (as ably demonstrated by none other than Jeremy Clarkson) and you will be amazed.

No joke.

Oh I forgot to mention that when in the car you have a rear camera and parking sensors to pick up anything untoward - so it all makes sense (to me).

I'm only a year and a bit since my deposit, so at least a year or two before I get to try it out on my own car, but doesn't the rear view camera mount on the trunk lid, therefore pointing at the sky when open (not really seeing any possible obstructions)?

As for using the remote from a far using whatever trick to amplify it sure, but then again you can just close your eyes when closing from the inside too - just as unsafe if not more, unless you tell me there is a camera inside of the car watching you to make sure you are paying attention when closing the trunk from there.

Nope it's below the bumper (Porsche think of everything).

Time to move on...

I'm standing next to the car, and the trunk is open. Why In the world can't I close it with the remote control?
Good idea. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled packages from the trunk, brought them into the house and had to go back out to the car to close the trunk. It would be much easier if I could hit the button on the remote to close the trunk. Especially in the rain.

That said, I can see issues where someone could accidentally close the trunk while someone was still removing packages. Its tough to do this if the 'close' button is on the trunk (where it is today).

Tough decision: it might be more convenient but maybe it might be a bit more dangerous?

Doesn't the closing trunk have sensing not to crush obstacles?

Yes, it does.
But I have had my head banged when I push the 'close' button, then grabbed the last package with my free hand and 'WHACK', got hit on the head when I didn't move fast enough.

For safety reasons. Someone or a child who leaves a hand on the trunk ledge or who's leaning into the trunk while the trunk closure is being activated via the keyfob from an obstructed vantage outside of the vehicle could pose a hazard, despite its safety feature.
