Hi -

Does anyone have experience having a used Taycan’s battery checked before purchase? I’ve called a few Porsche dealerships and they won’t do a PPI on a used car and I cannot find any local mechanics to service the car. (I’m in Los Angeles)

Know of any off the shelf devices or ways to ensure the battery is in good health before purchase?

Hi , I successfully had a Porsche garage provide a full SOH check on the battery as a condition of purchase. this was on an approved used Taycan. Really glad I did as it gave me peace of mind.
I have also been denied before as it is a very long process over multiple days. my sense is that they have to consider you a serious buyer before agreeing

Do you happen to know the pre check SoH as well as the post check result and can you share this info along with mileage (bef/aft) and model/build year and gen location (for climate ref)? Would be good to load to the SoH thread.

Hi , I successfully had a Porsche garage provide a full SOH check ... a very long process over multiple days.
So you mean a Porsche dealer, not an independent, right? That's interesting because that's how the Tesla SOH works, except owners can go into service mode and run it themselves. I believe it takes about 24 hours, where the car is plugged in, and it drains the battery to a low value through waste heat, and then charges to 100%, and then drains the battery again, and measures the kWh. This is likely to be more accurate than the OBD report. That's an approximation based on the car's memory of kWh charges and drains, I expect, and that possibly could be distorted depending on temperature and charge rates.

Did your Porsche garage do anything substantially different than my Porsche dealership?
The result of their $700 SoH test was essentially the same as what I obtained with an OBDII reader.

I think a similar process though they did not provide all the underlying detail e.g. PIWIS screenshots. I was made aware it took multiple days as they had to follow the full drain > charge > drain again process for the full test.
At the end i was provided with an official certificate which was signed by the head technician and indicated battery capacity (Stat of health) of 92% . @ circa 11,000 miles. which from what I have seen on data posted elsewhere was an acceptable/average level of degradation for the mileage (though of course I would have preferred the number to be higher)

yes that's correct it was an official Porsche dealership.

Just as a ref pt - firstly 92% is a very solid number for that mileage for the Taycan when compared with our forum data.

Also we’ve received multiple full ‘factory’ assessments of SoH on Taycan’s (SoH thread) and most are within 1-2 % of the ‘flash’ readout provided by the car via std 3rd party OBDII scanners - one was closer to 2.5-3% difference. And thee are a ton of variables at play in either measurement!

Bottom line - a +/- 1% variation of flash vs factory test is more than acceptable to me for having a sense of where the car’s HV battery health is at whatever mileage. So using an OBDI scanner to quickly assess a used car SoH is fairly sound imo and simply evaluate the result with a +/- 1% for a decent guess at factory test result.

Thanks and I agree. as another reference point I have just received my ODBii reader from amazon and plugged it in and got a read of 92% , exactly the same as the 'full' factory test result (albeit with a few days and some miles driven between the two).
