The Taycan comes with some real trade-offs that don't make it a clear #1 as a daily driver - even outside of budget considerations, there's a number of convenience/capability aspects where it's substantially behind. (Porsche has done almost zero to close the gap via OTA over the last 3 years, so I don't expect this to change either). And on the sports car side, it's further away from the 911 than I expected.

Loaded Taycan
vs
911 + daily Taycan
vs
911 + Ioniq 5N or Model 3/S or BMW + delta in cash

I would pick door number three. (and be tempted to stick the delta in cash into a better 911)
??‍♂ different strokes.

I’m surprised you think the Taycan is not comparable driving-wise, but then again, my 911 is much more “raw”/primitive (which I prefer, for what it is), and so the Taycan is obviously much more comfortable. But otherwise they have near identical driving position, communicative steering, handling.. their respective OTA capabilities are also similar, and that bothers me none.

As far as I’m concerned, the 911 + Taycan (wagon) is the perfect garage, covering everything from Home Depot to track days. I wish it had a towing option (so maybe there is a plus for a Tesla in that regard).

Yup. Definitely a "different strokes" kind of situation.

For what it's worth, I totally get where you are coming from too.

It's just that going in, I though the Taycan could get closer to marrying the best of all worlds then it, in the end, managed (IMHO). An example for a car that for its time got closer, IMHO, is the BMW e92 M3. With some small brake upgrades, it was fun on the track. The V8 was a joy above 6k, the stick shift decent. For its time, the software etc was great and you didn't really have any trade-offs vs. other BMW daily drivers. The interior with napa leather was good enough, etc. I was hoping the Taycan was going to be that and more, transported into the EV era.

As for comparable "driving wise" with a decent 911: Personally, I'm not huge on the blended brakes, the transmission isn't great, and IMHO the handling isn't really in the same ballpark at all once you push it a bit (it's great for a 5,000lb sedan, but still, physics...) I have zero desire to track this thing again, and I'm not nearly as likely to drive into the mountains with it "just because" as I was with the 911 or the M3.

I've never driven a Model S. I sold my 2021 Model 3 SR+ to get a 2020 Taycan Turbo S.

PRO:

Way more comfortable seats

Suspension is much better

Quicker acceleration

Better audio system (Burmester)

Better overall driving experience, more premium feel, more satisfying to own

Weird thing to note but the hood is more sturdy so closing the frunk is easier

Surround view is easier for parallel parking than Tesla when parking next to curbs.

CON:

Innodrive is nothing compared to Autopilot or FSD

Backup camera is terrible (unless you optioned Surround view)

No walk away lock, only auto-unlock

Porsche software is better than Lexus, Kia, Toyota that I've driven, but definitely not Tesla

No meaningful OTA updates

Not a lot of people care about this but... no web browser or YouTube.

Taycan is wider than the Model 3

Phone app is not as robust

Basically, Tesla is easier to drive, Taycan is more fun.

With the 911, you chose the Porsche that represents everything Porsche is, heritage, evolution, performance, prestige, brand-identity.
All that, a Taycan cannot have after hardly 5 years of existence, the same way a 911 does.
If I look at the position of the Taycan in the Porsche model line-up though, I clearly state: the Taycan is already a good Porsche.
I agree with this. The Taycan is a fantastic car when it is operational, but all the visits to the service centre for lots of niggles makes it hard. In France you will have to pay an extra CO2 tax of 60,000 Euro for a 911. That is a bitter pill to swallow!

This ad is something Taycan will not live up to

It is pretty funny to me that lots of you guys are comparing model 3s and a decade old Teslas to a Porsche. Different segment cars, different price ranges, targeted to different audiences. This is a hardly a fair comparison.

I drive 2023 model X plaid and my wife drives 2023 Porsche CT. Even though I like CT looks, this is where it ends for me. Yes, fit and finish is better with the Porsche, but Tesla has come a long way with interiors. I guess it depends if you like minimalistic design or not. Poor charging infrastructure, at least in the US, constant recalls and lack of parts at dealers, much inferior user interface, over the air updates, much improved Tesla service with constantly available loaners (at least in my area), etc. In a nutshell, I drive her car sometimes and enjoy it, but always cannot wait to get back to my plaid.

I think Porsche could have used a page from the Tesla playbook and foregone the 'total redesign' of the Taycan. Tesla puts their money into making their cars better instead of cosmetically changing every 3-4 years. Porsche would have been much better off if they had kept the original design, and taken all the money spent on what be a very significant effort to simply 'change' the body panels, and put it into making a better car.

It may be funny, but that was the question that started this thread: for those who moved from Tesla to Taycan, what were their impressions.. I guess not many moved from a brand new S? ??‍♂

Do you mean like what they've done with the Taycan facelift? Virtually identical exterior, and a vastly improved car in areas that matter? The technical presentation even had a slide on where they spent their efforts - and it’s really not that expensive or time-consuming to redesign the headlights.

I am a total Porsche person....I have a vintage 2009 997.2 for noisy sporty fun, a 2012 Cayenne for Home Depot runs, and a 2020 Taycan 4S for its sophisticated futuristic performance. Fortunately, I have had no problems with my Taycan since new, save those of my own doing.
I enjoy the distinct attributes of the three vehicles, and the convenience of having one for each purpose.

I agree - and there are a number of things Porsche has done to make the 2025 a better car - more range, more power, quicker charging etc. My point is they could have used the massive amount of time and money they spent on redesigning every single body panel to make even more improvements in the car.

Improvements on the actual performance? Do you mean power, charging speed, chassis control?
The power of my Turbo S is way more than I can use, need (or handle) in everyday-driving.
The face-lift has even more ?

Could be performance, features, interface, or just a lower list price...;)
