  • Xiaomi’s new SU7 Ultra electric sedan has reportedly lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in a crazy 6:46.874.
  • If true, the Ultra is more than 20 seconds faster than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and also wastes the Rimac Nevera.
  • The 1,527 hp SU7 Ultra is expected to debut later today and it should reach 62 mph from rest in under 2 seconds.
If you weren’t already taking Chinese automakers seriously, today is a good day to start. If comments made by Xiaomi’s boss are true, the smartphone maker’s new electric sedan has just annihilated the Porsche Taycan’s Nurburgring lap record.

As a non-production EV, doesn't it need to beat the Volkswagen ID.R at 6:05.336 in order to break a record?

yes and no- it honestly doesn't matter - for actual official records yes it does matter - for broadcasting where the Chinese are with regards to this whole "car thing" - well message sent - this is a warning shot across the bow of the germans - and they have no response - meanwhile most (all?) of them are begging to go back to the good old days w/ICE's with exhaust notes they can overcharge for - they are finding EV's/Digital are not their thing

also let's not forget the multitude of conflicting interests in Germany/EU - just one of those interests is labor - and it takes less labor to make an EV (by Ford's estimate up to 30% less labor for example)…this is not good for the german economy…there is also less money to be made post sale as EV's don't require the extensive upkeep of ICE vehicles draining valuable revenue from their post sale infrastructures.

other complex interests: dealers, supply chain, EU diplomatic relations across increasingly meaningless boarders, etc…

the Chinese have none of this legacy baggage to attend to in their push for a new car industry…

EV's are different and so far VW/Audi/Porsche have not mastered them…hence their desire to return to more familiar business practices…

I see all their teeth nashing about ICE's and EV demand to be very simialr to Blockbuster responding to Netflix…reasoned analysis that misses the point.

the german's are in trouble - nothing immediate by the way - but they are not looking in the right places for the "core problems" - and the siren song of past glory with ICE vehicle's is too easy of a brief inside the conference rooms of the big office buildings…but IMHO misses the bigger picture and distracts from the real reason their EV's are not selling.

the mighty German/swiss/european watch making industry built on 19th century mastery of watching making technical/mechanical skills/mastery doesn't matter at all when their main computer in the center of the dash board takes 3 minutes to boot up in the morning and logs you out of your account so you have no addresses in your navigation database…digital is hard - especially when there is not a seat at the table for everyone that was previously there.

this is tricky tricky stuff to navigate - no wonder they want to continue making ICE vehicle's - they know how to do that.

As a Kraut myself I would suggest not to oversimplify everything.

There is no thing like:
- the germans
- the americans
- the british
- the chinese

Of course the whole BEV situation is complicated like any big transition and automotive companies have been risk averse for centuries. Stopping/Turning a huge oil tanker is hard. All the actors you have named have different interests which do not necessarily align.

But a crisis is not always a bad thing, if you take a different view it is a huge opportunity as well. Most chinese car companies nearly started from scratch which meant fewer decisions and less liabilities from the past.

We will see how this is going to play out.

They are actually making a road legal version also, with less air vents & intakes. And wtih a fully interior trim.

The fact of the matter is, for a 70k fully specked price, impressive. For a automaker that had 0 car knowledge in 2021, VERY VERY impressive, that they got to this within 3 years.

Driver that never went on a driving circuit until then, don't know that brakes overheat, and pushed the car too far. Shocked pikachu face.

But on that subject. Porsche has been doing brakes for how many years? Taycan has had brake failures, multiple accidents reported; there's also active recall on brake fluid hose.

So if Xiaomi can claim that they have been doing cars for 3 years as an excuse, what about Porsche, what's their excuse?

You are right.
However, with a (privileged) overview of the EU situation, same would have happened (and will happen) with hybrid and ICE cars: Chinese cars are just cheaper ?‍♂
The middle class purchasing power steadily decreases and you have to make choices... ?

Sorry to interrupt, did the Taycan GT have the Weissach Pack? If not, then Porsche has another chance.

It did.

It why I don't understand the outrage from porsche fans on reddit. "It has a roll cage and no back seats... " Well, so did the damn Taycan GT. What's the difference? ?

They confirmed that the only difference from the prototype and the road version is the hood air vents and bigger air intakes; which would remove the "frunk" if present. There will for sure be 3rd party conversion kits however.

Interior trim, will of course be present, compared to the prototype which has bare metal. It will have an impact also on performance, but likely not as big as actual cooling capacity being removed.

But I think people are missing the point. This car was just a name on a mobile phone manufacturer excel sheet. 3 years later, it's beating records, at 1/3 of the price. As daveo4EV said, the message is very well sent to the german automakers, and it is: "we are coming, very fast"

Reminds me of Ralph Nader and VW, not that I believe a word of it. I still chuckle thinking such a thing can happen in this century.
(2) "When a VW is hit from the front, the odds are greater than one in four (the exact figure is 26.1 percent) that the seat tracks, which hold the seat in
place, will be damaged. This figure is only a little higher than for other cars; what is important is that in 38.8 percent of these cases, the seat was torn completely loose from its track. When his happens in a rear impact, the occupant and his seat can be thrown into the rear of the car, injuring him and the rear passengers. The seat's occupants can even be ejected out the rear window, since the seat belt and shoulder harness offer little or no restraint to such rearward movement..."

well I've said the same thing about tesla:

you can strap a JATO bottle to a turd - it'll go super fast, but it's still a turd.
