Buying Advice, new Porsche (Taycan Turbo S)

Hello all! First time posting on this forum after lurking around for a while!

Love the look of the Taycan since it was released and always wanted one. After researching, watching reviews etc.. I finally made the decision to buy a CPO Porsche Taycan Turbo S. I've found a 2021 Turbo S with the colour combination and spec I like, but I've reading about problems with the 2020/21 cars. I think the one I am going to see was first registered Jan 21, it has had all the necessary recalls but would love to hear what the community thinks? Is it too much of a risk? Should I look for a 2022+ year model?

The power of the car is quite intimidating, I am scheduled to test drive one this weekend. I currently drive a Tesla Model 3 LR AWD so have experience driving an EV, just not a Porsche What's the power delivery like whilst in Standard/Range mode? Does it feel twitchy? Will I need to change my underpants? Or does it feel safe if driven slowly/responsibly? My wife would like to drive the Taycan occasionally and I would like for her to be safe, she's not used to driving fast/powerful cars.

Would the dealer likely have any stats on battery degradation? I know they don't provide any type of battery health certification, but wondering if there is anything I should be asking them about the batteries?

I have paid a deposit, and the dealer has agreed to refund the deposit if I test drive the car and don't like it or find anything else that might be concerning, just don't want to make a mistake and rush into this!

It's crazy that they seemingly refuse to give battery degradation info on your car themselves. However, it sounds like it's a little involved and time consuming for them to get accurate data. I guess they don't give out HP numbers for second hand 911s either though ?‍.

If they're letting you have it on your own for the afternoon, then you can get an obd scanner and get an approximation of the battery health yourself. If not maybe you could ask to do it, but i suspect we both know the answer. All above my pay grade, but quite easy apparently.

Get them to show you a photo of the under tray of the car and also of the in side edges of the tyres. That they should be able to do easily.

If its got the 22kw AC charger, has it been upgraded to the one that doesn't break?

It doesn't have the 22kw AC charger, just the standard one. It does make me worry that they won't either provide a battery health certificate or give any stats on battery degradation, kind of makes me think...what are they hiding lol

It's going in for a major service tomorrow I think, I have asked if they inspect the battery tray as I've seen some posts about tray/battery damage and it costing a lot of money to fix, but have not had a response back yet. As for tyres, they've told me the current tread doesn't meet standards and all four tyres are being replaced which is great!

I will ask them to take a photo of underside of the car when it's on the ramp! I do have an ODB scanner somewhere, used to plug it into my old BMW, not sure if it will work on the Taycan, but a great shout. Thanks for the advice!

Would be helpful to see how the old tyres have worn. Some of us seem to get even wear and others get the insides of the tyres trashed. Hard to see and potentially dangerous if you’re not looking out for it. Loads of threads on it too.

I am starting to get a little frustrated with the dealer to be honest, they were really keen to get my deposit, but not so keen to respond to my calls/questions regarding the service, battery tray etc... I will ask if they can send me some pictures of the tyres but not holding out much hope

Sounds about right i'm afraid.

I wonder if you could share full spec (window sticker with all options listed) and how many miles.
I would stay away from 2020 but 2021 you should be good as long as it is a CPO and all recalls are done and which ones are still open (we can help you review them). As far as battery health, since it is still under warranty, I would not worry about it, and we can help you measure it yourself after you get the car.

All Taycans are very smooth in driving, so I am not sure why the concern of it being too powerful and twitchy. I have driven them all and the good thing is it is a super comfort cruiser in daily and can be a beast when you need it to be. I just took a friend for a drive with a few launches and even then they are so smooth the initial push wears out quickly and you are just gliding along after that.

I wouldn’t buy from this dealership. When you have problems you want a dealership that you can rely on. I’ve read so many experiences on this forum that I feel lucky I decided last minute to order with another dealership with whom I felt much more confortable (smaller but better on all fronts). It turns out their service/garage is excellent as well. I guess each dealership has its own culture. Either customer focused (on the sales and service side) or just money focused. It makes a difference to know that you can trust and rely on a good dealership on all fronts (good and rapid diagnosis in case of a problem, trustworthy and regular communication etc)

For balance, I have a 2020 Taycan Turbo S and it’s been faultless. If you’re buying from an official Porsche dealer and the car is being sold as “Porsche Approved” it should come with 2 years warranty.

I definitely concur with the don't rush advice because this is a sizeable investment and you want to get it right. The market is flooded with used Taycans, and I doubt that the sales rep has other buyers lined up for that 2021 Turbo S.

Sounds like you're happy with the mileage as it must not be excessive, but let us know how many miles it has anyway.

Getting frustrated with the dealership this early is concerning. The relationships with the sales and service reps are everything, and in this soft market they should be bending over backwards to accommodate your pre-purchase requests which are certainly not out of the ordinary.

Do you plan to have this Turbo S serviced at the same dealership? You may end up getting along with the service rep a lot better than the sales rep.

When I take my 2022 RWD in for service, my service rep sends me a video of the car's underside. It's much better than a photo in my opinion, and I hope your dealer can take a video for you. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Thankyou for the advice! It has 20,811 miles, I think that’s reasonable for its age? The dealership isn’t local to me where I am buying the car, but i am planning on dropping my local dealer to say hello and Find out what services they offer etc..

i am still waiting for the dealer where I am buying the car to get back to me with pictures of the battery tray so I can look for dents. It should have had a full service today and four new tyres as the tread was too low, I have also asked for pictures of the tyres to see if the wear is even.

The dealership I am buying the car from is not local, so I think because I’m not local they are not bothered about service they offer, they were keen to take my deposit but not so keen to follow up on my questions about the battery tray, battery health etc… i can refund the deposit *if* if I feel there is something wrong with the car, and look for another Taycan from a dealerships that’s closer to me. I am going to ring my local dealer tomorrow to say hi and find out what services they offer etc…
