LED traffic lights don’t require replacement every year at a minimum like traditional incandescent lamps do.Going by these numbers, why are traffic lights not coming as "doubles", two traffic lights in one? Imagine each traffic light actually has 2 traffic lights, 180 degrees offset only one of them active, with a motorized rotation mechanism which can rotate it 180 degrees when active light burns out. Heck, put 4 of them 90 degrees apart, that would quadruple the life of the LED traffic light at probably less than 4x the cost, yet still cheaper than a single one plus one replacement (which by your numbers is a minimum of $6K, $1K original light + $5K replacement cost + 1K replacement light).
Compact fluorescents in traffic lights are not competitive against LEDS because they don’t turn on fast enough & the ones that do have a much shorter lifetime than a LED array.
The lifetime of the traditional incandescent lamps is 1-2 years while LED array traffic lights is 10-20 years.
The time to replace an LED array module is the same as an incandescent lamp replacement so the maintenance cost is 1/10th to 1/20th of the incandescent lamp replacement every one to two years.
The power savings from the LEDS is just an additional bonus.
