Ticking time bomb.
But with build in fire suppression!

Kidding aside, from all the batteries where you found water/coolant they didn't burn down but made it to your shop.
They shut down, like they should, right?

None of them shut down. The ones that shutdown were only the ones that had imbalance between modules greater than the thresold of 0.3V.

Those which had poor isolation but the cells remained relatively balanced will never shutdown until the short circuit!

These battery cases are being pressure-tested and only a few don't qualify through QC and the only one that somehow managed to get through while it shouldn't ends up here in this topic. 😉
The entire compartment is pressure tested to provide resistance to leaks from outside . I assume in this case impact damage caused a coolant pipe rupture. If so i’d be interested to know the extent of the damage to the protection plate, especially as this is the new j1.2 one.

This is the one phrase that stands out in this post. Chances of water making its way into your Taycan battery are altogether minimal be it from rain/flood or even coolant.

But when your battery is full of water, or leaking electricity due to deteriorated cells, the BMS will still allow you to charge and drive as normal. Ticking time bomb.

I cannot prove anything, but I would be willing to bet that a significant percentage of all the Taycans that have burned worldwide (except those caused by impact/accident) could have been prevented were the BMS programmed correctly
Did the leakage in this case result from impact damage?
If so what was the extent of the damage?

We know from info supplied to safety authorities that Porsche believes that, in batteries with the acknowledged production defect, some charging conditions can cause fire.

It follows that any battery fire not caused by charging is due to a BMS omission, regardless of leakage, unless the fire is from outside in, e.g. from brake fluid?

For the recent j1.1 OTA update that followed the safety recalls, I’d love to know what conditions it detects and alerts on.

I meant they got the yellow/red warning when a short circuit was detected.
That why they were brought to you in the first place, right?

My point is that they didn't catch fire, that's what everyone's afraid of according to previous replies.
Not to condone the issues but still...

No, the protection plate underneath was intact. One coolant pipe ruptured

Yeah but that's like getting shot in the operating room... Better than getting shot in the middle of nowhere but I'd still rather not be shot :D

did you see how black the battery is?

Besides the first 9J1.2 has gone up in flames on its own last night in Xian China

Of course you get an error message once there is a short circuit because the current capability is overloaded. It's too late at that point. It will either destroy the battery or the car will catch fire, because there is nothing the BMS can do prevent it at that point.

If it was programmed properly you would get a warning WAY before anything like that happens, essentially no fire risk and no shorting of the battery. The car would stop driving as soon as even a small amount of any liquid would be present in the battery. That's exactly how the majority of EV's work.
Another issue entirely is a live battery frame with 800V. Do you think that's healthy for you?

I don't understand the making endless excuses part. Eventually someone will die because of this and all Taycan sales will be halted, all cars recalled and Porsche sued for gazillions.

Reading threads on this forum like this really makes me vacillate wildly between being happy this information exists from enthusiasts who care so much, and wishing I never discovered it.

I would assume it's quite common since they had to make a tool for it:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10238775-0001.pdf

The battery clearly can't detect all leaks by itself, not enough sensors.
At first I was unsure if the purpose of the bulletin was pressure testing the battery compartment seals for leaks, or the battery coolant system. Looking up the tool supplier, Polaris, it seems to be the latter.
