Taycan GTS (J1.2)

Sharing my observations after swapping my 5 year J1.1 4S with a new J1.2 GTS (PTHGA7F9) back in December. Feedback and comments welcome, especially if you can help on the points in bold (I’ve tried a few searches on the forum …)

Power - As a road car, I think for me the sweet spot in terms of power would have been the 4S with perhaps just a little extra. The GTS feels like it’s hardly trying and it needs a track to be fully appreciated, which I guess is what the GTS is about.

Charging - I’d mastered the J1.1 and used timers to take advantage of cheap overnight electricity. In the J1.2 I expected Optimised Charging set to manual with preferred start and end times to do the same, but the car charges regardless of the times. I gave up and now use an Ohme EVSE with Intelligent Octopus Go to smart charge, which is better even though it causes annoying charging errors from the car. I’d like to stop the errors with smart charging and also understand how the car timers are supposed to work.

Range - So far I’d estimate it has around 40 miles more than the 4S would on a full charge, but I’ve not had it in any really hot weather yet.

Cruise Control - Standard cruise control was great in the 4S to keep speed in check, especially in lower limits, but ACC is a pain because it often misreads traffic and randomly slows down quickly. Reducing the distance monitored helps, but I’m now trying the (Speed) Limiter function which also uses the cruise control stalk.
Also, the cruise control stalk looks the same, but Porsche frustratingly rearranged its use - I’ve built up the muscle memory for this new configuration, but still think the original was a much better arrangement.

Drive Modes - For every day use I prefer Normal mode over Sport as the transmission is smoother, but I also prefer the Sport chassis settings. It’s not possible to save that combination.

ADAS - This hasn’t been the pain I expected from driving other cars and I’ve not found it intrusive apart from Lane Keeping Assist which is easily switched off (I just press and hold the small button on the cruise control stalk for a few seconds every time I jump in).

Surround View - The display comes on automatically when the car goes into reverse, which is often helpful but when you don’t want it there’s nothing to press on the screen to remove it - the only way I’ve found is to go back into neutral. Am I missing something?

Matrix Headlights - These are brilliant (pun intended). I used to get flashed a lot in the 4S so I think the headlights were a bit bright for other drivers, but that’s hardly happened in the GTS with the matrix headlights doing their thing. They can’t ‘carve out’ a darker gap around vehicles waiting to pull out from junctions in the same way that they do when following or for oncoming vehicles.

Vehicle Status in the App - Is often greyed out, typically if the car hasn’t been used for a day or two. Once it is greyed out, I can still communicate with the car for a few days (e.g. make the lights flash from the app) and the status comes back, but any longer and the car goes offline altogether. The dealer investigated but can’t find anything. Never an issue with the 4S and it was parked in the garage just the same, so it can’t be mobile coverage. Does anyone else have this issue?

Vehicle Tracker - PVTS was a standard fit when I purchased the 4S so just needed activating, but now it’s a (fairly expensive) install.

That apart, this car seems rather jinxed - I’ve had it just over 4 months (and was out of the country for about half of that) and have done about 1200 miles, but hey, first world problems and I’m very fortunate to have this fantastic vehicle:
  • On collection: a rear tyre was low on pressure. It turned out to be a very slow leak and has taken multiple trips to the dealer - they kept looking at it and testing it before finally doing the obvious and refitting and re-sealing the tyre and replacing the valve. On my first trip back they suggested it was the cold weather … yeah sure, that corner of the car is always colder than the others 🙄
  • At 800 miles: a front tyre burst from a pothole, fortunately the wheel was completely undamaged. The car was transported back to the dealer for a new tyre and to check for suspension damage or alignment issues (none 🙂).
  • On collection after the tyre replacement: the car was washed and they managed to get a bubble of air and water under the PPF on the front bumper, so they’re now arranging for it be replaced (glad I arranged the PPF through the dealer!).
  • At 1000 miles: stone chip in the windscreen precisely in driver’s line of sight which then started to crack, so it’s booked in for a new screen.
  • A false drop-off charge from Heathrow Airport - I had to report this to the police to get a refund, but pretty sure the car hasn’t been cloned as neither the police or I could get photographic proof from them.

Does Intelligent Octopus not work with your J.1.2?

I'm on OVO Charge Anytime which is now a bit more expensive since the charging cost jumped from 7p to 14p but offset by no premium on the daytime rate. I think both Octopus and OVO use the Enode API which works reasonably well but I have to set the max charge in the car to 100% or the Charge Anytime App won't override it if set too low.

Whereabouts in Bucks are you?

Really helpful and comprehensive report for anyone trying to jump ship from a J1.1 to a J1.2.

I have only driven J1.2 for a day or two for my own to get to know it purposes, but a few things surprised me.

4S vs. GTS - This seems to be right on point and also what @prj recommends as a sweet spot with his tune unlocking a lot of power from there with no need for a GTS. Also, J1.2 GTS looks no different, which many pointed out, such as disappointment with GTS models always having some unique looking things, with Macan EV GTS that I have on order having some stand out look to it as you would expect.

Charging - This is a big surprise as the whole point was that they would fix the charging interfaces to make it more logical and reliable.

Range - This also is a surprise with very little gain that you are reporting where the increase should be in as high as 35% increase vs. J1.1. and I have corporate graphs that show how these gains were achieved.

Cruise Control - that one I noted right away and really a non-starter but that is how Audi poison leaks into Porsche and ruins everything. I have Macan EV on order but for my son, but I am already mentally preparing that if I drive it, it will drive me up the wall.

Drive Modes - I hope someone can help out with this, as it does not seem to make sense, J1.1 has Individual mode that you have to dial in for each drive, and J1.2 was supposed to allow to save any settings under any drive mode. So this one makes no sense that you cannot customize Normal mode with a Sport chassis.

LKA icon now at least in the US shows status on the driver screen all the time even if it off, annoying to me as I like my screen clean, that J1.1 does very well. Must be a reg that requires to show driver that it is off with the icon always there.

Surround View - I am pretty sure on my J1.1 there is an X on the screen to cancel it.

Windscreen - I invested in the windscreen film which is a very special and expensive kind but cheaper than doing replace and recalibrate. The film at 26k miles is pretty dinged as car is very low and my work route has so many trucks loaded with rocks basically. I can always reapply that takes 2 days but I know my windscreen is not chipped.

I’m pretty sure that for J1.2 the only mode NOT customizable is Normal. And yes, I believe surround mode is locked to the screen while in reverse at all times (can’t dismiss).

Set the charge limit to what ever % you want (I keep it at 80%) and whenever it charges it won't go over that amount.

Set the departure day/time to when you want the car to complete the charging process. I have my set to Monday though Sunday at 7:00 AM. In this section is also Optimized Charing Times for when power is the least expensive (my is set to 12:00 AM to 7:00 AM).

Couple of scenarios to consider:

1) If you have enough current, it will charge starting at or after your optimized charging time and get done before your departure time. It chooses when to charging during that window.

2) If you don't have enough current it will start whenever it can to try and get done by your departure time. If the car needs 12 hours to charge to meet your departure time and your car is plugged in, it will start as early as it needs to (I have no idea what happens if that is over 24 hours).

3) If you don't have enough current to meet your departure time, you'll get a message on your phone (your app will also show it) saying so and it will charge as far as it can until your departure time and then it will stop charging.

I wish they simplified this like Tesla does... set max charge % and start charging time. The car starts charging at that time until it hits that %.

Drive Modes - For every day use I prefer Normal mode over Sport as the transmission is smoother, but I also prefer the Sport chassis settings. It’s not possible to save that combination.
You can't save anything to Normal, but you can override everything on all of the other modes. Set up Sport to however you want, save it and turn the knob to Sport when you get in.

^ Except that on J1.1 you can save Normal mode with Sport chassis to the Individual profile.

I'm also with Ovo Charge, curious to know - is your wall mounted home EVSE connected to Ovo in MNGD mode or have you connected the car to Ovo?

I'm connected to the car. I use the Porsche Mobile Charger plus which came with my previous Taycan

Intelligent Octopus does work with the J1.2 and a compatible EVSE - it charges at various times for the cheap rate, so not just in the overnight window. I get various charging errors that I have to ignore, for example because Octopus start and stop charging multiple times before finally getting to the target at the precise time requested. You need to provide Octopus with the details of your specific car model and EVSE for them to confirm compatibility - I couldn’t use the PMCC as it isn’t compatible.

I gave up with Intelligent Octopus on the J1.1 because they kept charging the car to 100% (they used to mess with the timers in the car), but that was quite a while ago and I’ve had no such issues with the J1.2.

I should have said I had a 4S with the performance battery and max range at full was 285+ depending on temperature. The GTS so far would work out at about 315+ with a full charge, but I‘m expecting that to improve with warmer weather and longer journeys.

I get it, this is not apples to apples if you stating your Range under different temp and potentially wheel/tire differences, but this is corporate claim below. I know this is all marketing and measured in unrealistic WLTP (why EU does that, escapes me if it has 25%+ error vs. reality or more). The point of the slide is that they worked really hard on the Range and I assume even tires are narrower now for better range. I like my wide J1.1 tires, except that there are really no choices in 21 inch All Season but Continentals.

One of the things I noticed after upgrading was additional wind noise from the drivers side / front area over 60mph. It is like a hissing / wind sound.

I am curious if you’ve noticed the same, having done a similar technology jump.

I also switched from manual charge doors to automated so that could be a factor too.

Basically looking for assurance that it’s normal.
