Sure i've sold cars - private and back to dealerships - but nothing that could have a $10k swing in either direction. WHen you're sellign a 4-5 year old honda you're talking a grand or two difference off of $18,000. With the Taycan i could see offers swinging MUCH more

I had to move to a condo - and have no charger :( ANd can't put one in - and paying to charge is no fun

I may inherit my wife's car which is a great car, and she wants a Mercedes

so the easiest things to do I BELEIVE:
1) trade it in at Merc
or
2) sell it to a carvana or CarmAx

Maybe semi-easy:
3) call my Porsche dealership, see if they want it. I imagine they'll lowball me if i'm not buying from them though

the NOT EASY THING -
4) sell privately myself. Is it worth it with all the scams and crackpots just wanting to drive this car with ZERO intention of buying it.

Also - for extra credit - I have a BRAND NEW battery with like 3,000 miles - thoughts on trying to get more out of the car because of that??

thanks, i have a little time - i'm just starting to go crazy thinking of having to do #4 and meeting a half dozen or more people just tire-kicking

After a long conversation with my new best friend ChatGPT, it recommended Cars & Bids. Gave me all the details on how to describe it, how the pictures should look, how much to ask with my spec everything.

The answer is…… all of the above.

Getting quotes from the online dealers takes just a few minutes. From in person dealers a few hours.

But either is worth your time for thousands of dollars difference.

Try selling yourself and use the above offers as backups or a baseline.

Keep in mind you likely save on sales tax trading it in depending on where you live.

Update - I was just wondering "for later"

the car my wife wants is released in a few months and i'll probably get hers then. I'd much rather wait and drive hers than drive one of my work vehicles day in day out

i may reach out to some of the online dealers. To get price points. My dealer owes me a a quick service - i'll ask them to look it over and give me a price - and then i'll compare and contrast and see if it's worth dozens of hours for more money with the public.

Not sure whether there are any tax implication you should consider as well. In some states you get sales tax credit on trade-in value. For example in my state (WA) me trading in a car for $100K on a $150K car would net me $110K off the new car, so a private sale would have to be at least $110K to make it even, therefore decently higher for me to even bother with a private sale (have done it in the past, a lot more hassle than just trading the car in).

I usually just take the financial hit and sell to Carmax. Thus far, they have offered more than the Porsche dealership and the process is very easy.

Selling an expensive luxury car privately can be a royal pain in the ass. I tries a handful of times, then decided it's not worth it. People just wanting a free test drive, people attempting to negotiate using weird tricks - had one guy try to pay me $50K in cash, which was $10K under the agreed price. All the while watching to possible scammers too. The closest thing I found worth while is consignment, let a used car dealer sell it for me, take a fee from the transaction - they handle test drives, as well as the purchase financing (they can offer the buyer a loan too). Other than that I would just trade it in, especially that in my state I get 10% sales tax credit towards the new car if I'm trading the old car towards the new one. I did however find it worth while sometimes to shop the car around a little, find a dealer offering the most, then have the dealer I buy from agree to do a trade-through, they trade it in towards the new car, but already have another dealer ready to take it off their hands for the same price. Most dealers I bought cars from didn't mind the trade-through, except for Tesla and one Acura dealer once (the latter resulted in me not buying the Acura as my next car, even though my trade was a 2 year old Acura, with Tesla the deal was close enough that I still took it).

Yeah, I just make two trips to Carmax: One for them to inspect and give me a firm price in writing and the second to drop it off and pick up my check. There is certainly more money to be made with extra legwork but I value the frictionless transaction more.
