Last weekend I stopped to charge at the Walmart EA station in Clarion, PA. The first 350kWh charger I tried had a blank screen. I moved to the second 350kWh charger where PNC did not work and the charger was grayed out and not selectable in the Charging NA app.

Thankfully no one else was at this EA location and I was able to move to one of the remaining 150kWh chargers. I plugged in the cable and after a brief handshake the charger screen was indicating that there was a communication failure with the car, that I should remove the cable, and that my credit card would not be charged (even though I did not use a credit card to start the session).

The SoC when I arrived was about 35%, the battery temp was good, and the car started to charge despite the message on the screen indicating that I should unplug the cable and try again. The rate of charge quickly reached 175kWh (at the 150kWh charger) and maintained that level. After 16 minutes the SoC was 80% and the rate of charger did not slow down as I expected. I decided to cut the session short since I was concerned that there might actually be a communication failure between the charger and the car and I did not want to continue at the high rate of charge.

Has anyone else encountered a 150kWh charger that delivered more than the expected charge rate?

BTW, the 16-miniute session is included in the My Porsche charging history.

I saw 163kW for a couple of minutes and then it was at 158kW for another 10 minutes or so. After that, it stayed around 143kW until it got closer towards 80%.
This was on a 150kW charger in Tustin, CA.

The chargers are limited by amps more than anything else. internal charger design, cable gauge etc are based on amps. Amps and internal resistance are what generate heat. Voltage has little effect.

Chargers are typically rated for around 375A which at 400V gives you 150 kW. Some battery packs however have slightly higher voltages than 400v. As the Taycan probably messages the chargers “give me the highest voltage you can as long as it isn’t more than [900V]” the charger probably steps up the voltage to a little over 400V, which even with a maximum of 375A gets you delivered kW slightly above 150kW.

I routinely see 175 kW charging at the nearby 150 kW EA chargers. As someone else noted, the real limit for a charger is the amps it can provide, and the wattage will be higher at a given amperage output if the voltage is higher (as it is in Taycan). I also saw a Lucid Air pull over 160 kW from a 150 kW charger.
