When I asked my dealer the same thing he said; It will be BMW/Audi smooth with 21 inch, Mercedes/Bentley smooth with 20 inch. Hope this helps

No particular experience with the Mission E wheels but I have driven the 20 inch Turbo Aero wheels (winterset with Goodyear winter tires) and these were relatively comfortable.

In spring/summer/autumn I used to drive on 21 inch Cross Turismo design wheels with Pirelli Pzeros and these are just a tiny bit less comfy as compared to the 20inch set up. Currently, I drive this 21 inch set as winter set and it is fine and comfy.

The summer set is now Vossen HF5 22 inch on conti sportcontact 6, and honestly not much diff as compared to the 21 inch set up. Also just a tiny bit but far from annoying. My RS5 B9 on 20 inch was relatively bumpy as compared to the Taycan on 22 inch.
I think for the Taycan with its great air suspension, just drive the car with the wheels you fancy, comfort wise you will be fine. I think the Taycan should at least wear 21 inch, it just looks better IMO. Comfort wise it is definitely fine.

For what it worths from a double previous Panamera owner, I find the Taycan with Mission-e wheels way more comfy than the Panamera 970 or 971. This is the first thing I noticed when I test drove the Taycan. Since then, no regret. Taycan is my daily and it’s very comfortable.

The ride is noticeably better on 20" wheels but still pretty good on 21"
I had a demo of both, preferred the styling of the 21" so specced them and bought a set of 20" winter wheels thinking if I really felt the 21" were too uncomfortable I could put summer tyres on the 20" rims later.

In fact the difference is easily felt on the poor roads around here but I find the 21" OK.

I did choose a Cross Turismo for the extra 20mm of bump travel, so my car will almost certainly have a better ride than a saloon or ST on bad roads anyway.

I have 21’s on my Taycan and had a loaner for 2 weeks with the same suspension and 20’s.

I found the 20’s to be a noticeably more comfortable ride.

if I had to do it again, no question I’d go with 20’s. The slightly improved appearance doesn’t make the harsher ride worth it - IMO

I suspect that none of the above actually answers the original question, because multiple variables are in play:

  • wheels: stock Taycan 20" vs. 21" wheels and tires
  • model variant: CT has extra suspension travel, others don't
  • suspension: airbag or not
Like the OP, I face the same dilemma. I want a sporty grip to be in league with my previous cars, but don't want to go down the road of hard riding again. Will 21" deliver the grip without the pounding?

Some strikes against the 20"'s: there's only two choices and they are only so-so looking, clearly the modest EV wheels in the lineup. And more disturbing, the 20" tire widths are quite narrow, my M5 has stock 20" wheels that are closer to the width of the Taycan 21" wheels. It seems like a bad idea to put a Taycan with 1100 lbs more weight on narrower tires, which if not just outright dangerous for sporty driving, maybe isn't much fun. Maybe I'm missing something: does the extra Taycan weight squash those narrow tires into a reasonable contact patch on the pavement or is it really just not going to perform.

Sadly PS4s is only available on the 20", and not on the 21", as these are great tires possibly the best of the Taycan choices, and they do a great job on my M5 with aftermarket KW V3 coilovers.

Some folks have stated not much difference between the two wheel sizes, others that there is a pronounce difference. But not much details about the car specs from which those opinions are based. 21" ride harshness might be mitigated by either having airbag suspension or the extra suspension travel of the CT (or both). Or not mitigated if the car was without that. I haven't heard much about CT suspension, but generally comments about the airbag suspension is that it is smoother than the steel suspension.

I drive a cross turismo and with 21 inch I find it comfortable. Please note this is personal, as other may feel it differently. Or perhaps for the sedan it may be slightly different.
I also have a summer set (HF5 Vossen) in 22 inch with even flatter tires as compared to the 21 inchs tires), but a very minor noticiable "discomfort" as compared to the 21 inch set up.
If you want to play it safe go for 20s...if you want better looks and (to me in a CT) similar comfort go 21s.

Hopefully we'll get a scientific answer to that interesting question, but in the meantime:
Porsche don't sell cars with tyres that don't perform, and they expect them to be driven sportily.
I was surprised by how much abuse was needed on a soaked skidpan to provoke a CT Turbo, with minimised stability intervention, on 20" wheels. I've certainly never felt my 20" wheels a constraint in public road driving, though I assume that 21" would enable better lap times on track.
That said- if sporty fun is the priority, lower grip could be better.

My Turbo has 20 inch tyres and is certainly smoooooooth in normal mode. We had a 'loaner' from the dealer for a week (a GT4s with 21 inch wheels) and there was a noticable difference - the 20 much better for comfort.
The other thing was that my turbo guessometer comes up with 240 miles range most of the time but the loaner showed 190 mile range (same battery pack). Did 170 mile runs on the same day in the 2 cars and the range performance was chalk and cheese. Were the tyres the difference? Others have said the 21 inch wheels reduce range. Dunno whether that is true but cant think what other difference could have caused the ranges to be so far apart.

I have 21 Mission E wheels and tires on for summer. I recently put on the 20's for winter and wow, what a difference. The 21's are harsh and 20's are smooth and quiet.

Making me rethink my wheel and tire choice.

Cheers

I so pondered this!

I decided on 20" on my air 4S CT. The ride is exceptionally good - far better than anything BMW or Audi on steels. It is SO incredibly smooth. The handling and grip are excellent and I push this car on Welsh B roads. It has PDCC (active anti roll bars) which may again help get that smooth straight ahead ride with no lumps of cast iron bolting the wheels together permanently - its not a track thing IMHO. 20" add about 9% to the range and tyres are a little cheaper and the ride better than 21". 21" wheel design and the way they sit always look better - but have more rolling resistance and less aerodynamics. However I made the right choice for me by miles.:)

In general, why would one wheel size be smoother than another? My guess is a smaller wheel may result in a taller sidewall but ?‍♂
