Since a few days my Taycan ST RWD (May 2022 - 5500 km) produces a deep hum while driving, that I haven’t heard before. Irritating because in towns that‘s often the mandatory speedlimit. I always drive in the setting Normal so nothing has been changed in de the settings. My Taycan has the 20” wheels. My dealer, whom I’ll visit next week, is not familiar with this complain.
Does anyone recognize this problem?

I have some kind a similar hum between 100-120. It disappears when driving over 125. I was visiting my parents in Doorn yesterday. It is less obvious on Duchts and French highways than Belgian. On the way back I was driving 135 km/h and it was gone. I think it is something with the tires although the sound doesn’t change when driving different speeds. I have a CT 4 also 20 inch wheel (Michelin) and noise reducing glass.

Thanks McgR for your reaction. When I see your photo, we have the same wheels and tires, also Michelin. From what I read, you don’t have the problem at lower speeds. If it varies with the country you’re driving, I would als think the sound comes from the tires. My Michelins are relatively new, as is the hum, so I am afraid it has another reason…

My 2022 had a bad wheel bearing from the factory. The shop foreman at my dealer said it was the second one they had on a 2022. They thought there might have been a bad batch of parts. Something to look out for. Mine made noise over 70 mph.

Interesting. Would you describe it as a humming sound. I my case it is a constant hum, the sound doesn’t change when changing speed. That is the strange thing with a wheel bearing or tire noise I would expect the sound would be different with 90 km/h vs 115 km/h. And it disappears at speeds > 125 km/h.

No have had it since day one. My tires have 4000 km. And with higher speeds than you report.

Thanks Rob, I’ll mention it when I’m at the dealer. Although the speed is different, yours is a 2022 too so who knows.

An update: Today I tried different settings and found out something that might help. The humming is there in Normal and in Sport, but NOT in the Range mode ?
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is Range mode in 1 or in 2 gear?

No but range mode is level -2 for suspension and sport and normal is -1. Nothing stuck under your car?

Don’t think so. My guess is that it’s in the gearbox itself. The revs change when putting it in Range mode. I don’t know in which of the two gears it is in when in range mode, but the sound is different. And no more humming at 50 km/h.

I visited my Porsche dealer this week and luckily they heard the humming sounds too. On the way to the dealer there was another disturbing noise at 100-115 km/h. Sounds a bit like a wavepool…

The dealer confirmed my diagnosis that it’s probably the gearbox. They tried to recalibrate it, but no succes. A ticket was made for Porsche Netherlands and I’m waiting for an employee to investigate the complaint further.

Anyone else has the same complaint? For the dealer I was the first one.

I have almost the same. Humming / buzzing sound between 65-75 km/h. This happens in all drive modes, but only when pushing the pedal slightly or the car is on acc / innodrive. Something in that speed range when applying speed. It happens after 10-15 minutes of driving so I think the car has to be warm for it to happen. Very annoying! PC will have a look at it.

Thanks Hakon. I read that you car does it in every drive mode, mine not when in range mode. Another difference is that it happens in my car immediately when I drive 50 km/h, not after 10-15 minutes. It’s always there. The ‘wavepool’ sound that I hear at 100 km/h does no disappear in range mode. Indeed annoying, very annoying for a new and rather expensive car. I’ll keep you all informed if (in time I fear) Porsche Netherlands has investigated the complain.

The RWD cars use first gear more often than AWD cars.

- Range: permanent 2nd gear (which is why range makes a bigger difference for RWD cars)
- Normal: 1st until ~80km/h / 50mph
- Sport (Plus): 1st until ~125km/h / 70mph

It'll also shift to second earlier at certain moments if there's no strong performance demand.

My new RWD started being noisy towards the end of the 1st gear range too, even though its only 4 months old with ~15000km / ~9000 miles driven.

My gearbox was replaced last year. Hum/grind in first gear.
