Fot those of you that didn't order ‘Porsche Electric Sport Sound’ - Here is the ‘Tequipment Accessories’ link and part number for which can be activated/deactivated via ‘Porsche Communication Management’ (PCM):

According to Porsche’s soon available PCM-option, it seems like all hardware for the ‘sport sound’ already are present (but I could be wrong). One could say one get more hardware than you payed and purchased (if never upgraded) . . . or the other way around (might be cheaper if the extra and unnecessary hardware wasn’t mounted at all).

Either way, this type of software upgrades on existing hardware are becoming more and more common on new vehicles today. Probably mixed opinions about it I guess, but at least wanted upgrade becomes more convenient and less troublesome - only a credit card and few clicks away.

Both in my ownership and for resale, I think I like it. I would be happy to add a couple of new extra gadgets after some time

While unheard of in the auto market until Tesla, it’s been common practice in technology for decades. I remember back in the 90s when I found out IBM was shipping mainframes & midranges with a boatload more CPUs than you bought, and you upgraded by simply paying them more and they turned on those CPUs. I’d always thought of software switches but hardware switches? When you think of the cost of upgrading and the possibility of losing the customer during the upgrade process, the ability to charge more to simply turn on what the customer already has...golden.

The optional part you pay for is probably only the internal sound, as EVs are required to make external sounds at slow speed in many countries. And it's just a good idea, so likely any external speakers would already be on every car to keep people from running over pedestrians in their shiny new Taycan.

I keep hearing this and that is should be there. Does anyone with a Taycan have confirmation? Has anyone who doesn't have the electric sound driven with their windows down or had someone confirm they can hear it? I regret not having specc'd the electric sound now and am trying to get it added in post-delivery since my car is already on it's way to the dealership for October pickup.

I also regret not having got the sport chrono package. :(

I did not order the electric sound. I can confirm that people outside the car have told me that the car makes the space ship sound. One person told me he heard it down the block before the car was in sight.

I don't receive my car until November, but a friend took one out for a test drive last week and the sports sound was something we tested on/off and there is a big difference externally with it set to on. Much louder especially between 10 and 30 miles per hour. Very noticeable when taking off especially (non aggressively leaving a car park for example).

I also wonder if the external volume changes in Sport+ (I drive in Sport or Sport+ most of the time)

Yes, that is by design.

Is Porsche the EV trendsetter?

Porsche Taycan Electric sound 1602646059462

AI translated from German:

We were allowed to take a very inspiring ride in a demonstration vehicle that is indistinguishable from a conventional EQC 400 4Matic. At least not visually, because recognizing the differences starts when opening the central locking system. There is a sound that sounds as if R2-D2 is dodging a laser saber. For all less Star Wars aficionados, who can't do anything with this picture: A short triad from a higher pitch mixes into a voluminous bass humming.

A team of physicists, sound designers, media designers, and electronics engineers has been working on giving electric models a holistic sound staging, which will also go into series production with upcoming EQ models. Holistic means that, in addition to acoustic feedback on processes such as unlocking and locking or plugging in the charging cable, sound worlds were also composed to illustrate the ride.

In the demonstration vehicle there is an additional monitor in the cockpit, which is used to feed in the sounds. In later production models, the configuration can of course be done via the infotainment system. Over-the-air updates for new sound designs are also conceivable. But what is to be configured there? Well, there are different theme worlds to choose from. In addition to a reduced version, there is a sporty sound that is based on well-known patterns from the world of combustion engines. One highlight, however, is the futuristic setting, with which the car actually sounds as if you were sitting in a spaceship while driving. A must for all science fiction fans in future model generations.

A digital signal processor with gigahertz computing power converts vehicle data into sound in real time for the dynamic sound world in the interior. For this purpose, pedal position, speed, recuperation and other parameters are evaluated. However, because a modern vehicle like the EQC collects and processes far more data every millisecond, it is also conceivable that the system could be extended to include the light sensor or the changing g-forces, for example. To use the appropriate phrase here: There is still a lot of music in this project.

"Music" is also a good keyword, because at the end of our test round there is still a surprise waiting. There is a still very experimental branch of sound staging. Here the data just mentioned is not simply converted into sounds, but into a real song. A synthesizer application was developed for this purpose, which makes the passengers feel like they are in the middle of a car commercial. When the driver accelerates through, the melody also accelerates and condenses into a more binding tone sequence. During recuperation, the acoustic background music makes the entire car feel relaxed. The idea of driving through a city at night with this technology in the reflection of neon signs and street lighting already has a decelerating effect in the imagination.

On another FoD debate thread there is talk of both hardware and software being necessary at the dealership. There is still no clear answer to this one!

I just spoke with my SA regarding adding in the Sports Electric Sound. Porsche stated there were additional wires and speakers which the dealership has ordered for me. They just stated they have never installed this before and didn't want my car to be the first without training. They will wait until someone else does it or their Taycan specialist has sufficient training to feel comfortable moving forward with installing the hardware to amplify the Electric Sound.

Anyone got a price to do this retrofit? I was told it's like 9 hours of work to put in 2 speakers, a control box and some wires... crazy...

Not exactly. The parts alone were quoted at $1038. I don’t know how much additional for labor.
