It's been raining in CA and while on the freeway, I hit a pot hole and my front passenger tire got a flat and had to be replaced. A month later the same situation happen to my front driver side wheel and tire had to be replaced. Has this happen to anyone else? Is it the fact that my wheels are too big and the car is super heavy so when you hit a pothole it blows your tire up? I'm hoping this isn't going to be a common issue.

My car info:
  • My car has the 21" Taycan Exclusive Design Wheels (The ones that look like big fan blades) Pic attached of my wheel pristine (not flat)
  • All season 21" tires
Incidents:
1) Flat tire #1 - Driving on a freeway in Sport Plus mode going 55mph, hit a pothole and instant side wall blowout on front driver passenger wheel.
2) Flat tire #2 - Driving on a freeway in range mode going 80mph, hit a pothole and instant side wall blowout of the front passenger wheel.

Anyone else have this happen? or ideas or advise?

Nothing yet but drive on truly terrible side roads here in Houston also on 21"'ers - I'm guessing these must have been humdingers of pot holes to tear into your sidewalls or not so much (which would indeed be worrying)?

Sadly, I didn't see them cause it was poring rain and the road was super wet (maybe I should have been driving slower LOL). But when it happen, it was a huge thump (I knew it was a bad pothole, the sound and thump that makes you say "$hit!!!") After the thump, the alarms started to sound in the car for loss of tire pressure, I knew the car had a blow out and pulled over. But yes, a think they were humdingers of a pot holes.

This can't be your first car. Flats happen. Period. Especially with low profile tires.

I have the same car and wheels. I hit a pot whole and had to replace my front passenger tire. I think there is a good possibility of this continuing with the 21" tires. I am thinking about putting a spare in the trunk.

Granted I've never had 21" tires, I've had 20" wheels, but this has never happen to any of my past porsche or audi cars. It's probably just bad luck and timing since they were a month apart, just made me think if the weight of the taycan and the low profiles mean likely flats if you hit bad potholes.

I may look into it too. Both times for me, I was waiting for hours for a tow and than dealing with ordering a tire was all so annoying.

Low profiles on bad US roads are a pain..if they don't go flat from potholes they bubble - which is less obvious but dangerous. I got the 19 inch wheels to avoid all that..not as sexy but much better for potholes

The Porsche-spec EV version of the tires (NF0?) have a stronger sidewall to accommodate the greater weight of the Taycan. Are your tires the EV version?

What California freeway were you driving on where you can safely do 80 in the rain and there were potholes? I’ve been here 28 years and I’ve never seen a pothole on any of the freeways.

And I’ve run low profiles on 20s and 21s on multiple cars for years and years with zero issues. The only blowout I’ve ever had was on 19s in a massive parking lot pothole.
1st one was on the why 24 south right before the 580 interchange in Oakland
2nd was on the 101 south bound passing south SF in the carpool lane. (pretty bad stretch of why)

WOW I have to totally look into that. How do I know. It was the stock tires that came with the car. Good Year Eagle all season 21"

Honestly, I think a low profile tire on a 21" wheel is going to have a good chance of a flat or at least bubbling with a big pothole hit.... full stop. The vehicle weight isn't even necessary. I've had tons of issues with an E92 M3 on low profile tires, that car is >1000lb lighter.

I doubt the specific tire matters enough either. They are designed around the same parameters and given the same dimensions, slight optimizations aren't going to make the difference IMHO.

The options are:
choose 20" or even 19" (this was one of the considerations why I chose 20" Turbo Aeros)
find a tire protection plan that covers potholes

and in terms of preventing it with the current setup: get better at dodging :)

You've never seen a pothole on a Bay Area freeway? Take a drive on 101N between Redwood City and San Mateo, you'll find plenty. There are other hot spots as well. It's the reason I spec'd 20" wheels.

I drove that stretch of road to and from work for the better part of 15 years. Never hit a pot hole.

28 years in the Bay Area and the only big pot hole I ever hit was in a parking lot.
Well, I've been here for 44 years save 4 years at college and I've never had a puncture from a pothole even while driving quite a bit on drag radials on my old CTS-V so there's that.

There are potholes to hit on our freeways. They don't make the asphalt out of silicon fairy dust and diamond aggregate here.
