After loving our 2022 Taycan CT4 for over a year but limiting our exploring to round trip drives in coastal Maine within the capability of our beautiful Gentian blue car we decided to venture into the world of charging away from home. Admittedly because we had had several misadventures at our nearby Electrify America station before actually being able to charge we had a certain amount of trepidation.

We had heard about a scenic route up through the mountains of Maine to a place called Coburn Gore on the Canadian border. There was one charging station about 75 miles from home in Farmington Maine and another 75 miles to our goal . We figured the worst that could happen was if we couldn’t charge at the 62.5V Chargepoint destination we could safely limit ourselves to a round trip of 150 or so miles. We had no trouble finding the chargers located in a big Hannaford’s grocery lot and both chargers were empty. At first for some reason my Chargepoint card didn’t work, but on a retry it went smoothly. As I am 86 and not very strong I had a little trouble wrestling with the CCS cable but got it attached and 15 minutes later we had added another 37 miles to our 207arrival figure so we knew we could safely reach the border and get back to Farmington without being stranded in the wild backwoods of Maine.

The scenery was spectacular including Sugarloaf ski resort with some trails still holding on to the last patches of snow, We saw crystal clear, mountain lakes and impressive old growth forests towering on both sides of the highway. There was very little traffic but absolutely no cell signal leading me to wonder what would happen should we get a flat or have an unwelcome encounter with a moose. Luckily, we made it to the border without incident ending our second 75 mile leg.
On the way back we had plenty of range which I attributed to the unbelievable coasting efficiency of our Taycan. So we took a side trip on our way home stopping at Rangley Lake for supper and being rewarded with views of Saddleback mountain and more lakes.

We finished our 325 mile trip with only one charging stop and 35 miles of range.. Total range as calculated from our consumption figures was 293 miles! Conditions were perfect in he high 70’s and low 80’s and very little traffic

.Life is good! Can’t wait for the next road trip!!

We had a plan. We were supposed to have the car by now. A trip up to our cabin near the BWCAW to explore slow charging at a destination. A trip up the north shore of Lake Superior to Fort Francis to explore lower end DC charging. A weekend in Chicago to get comfortable with a longer distance using 200KW or higher charging. Then in mid August culminating in a road trip to Colorado for a wedding and then on to the west coast to visit wineries.

Now we're looking at an early August delivery, so may just start with the cross country jaunt. If I can convince my wife that is, what's the worst that could happen?

What a great post and makes me want to plan some North American road trips…! Maybe we should start a thread on ‘best drives’ but the if I wasn’t so lazy I could probably do a forum search to see if one already existed!
