Hey guys. Sad news over Mother's day weekend. Went to my parents for lunch with the kiddos, heard a loud bang outside. A drunk driver crashed into our car and then hit 2 other parked cars. Currently in the shop awaiting inspection and appraisal. 2020 Taycan 4S with only 38k miles.

What are the odds for a total loss? My insurance says it needs to be 75% of the value in repairs to consider it a total loss.

No way this can be repaired and but if so, the car value will be close to zero after that as the damage is just so extensive, with no dealer would agree to take it in as a trade in almost guaranteed. The main issue will be what impact this had on the battery and the cooling system, if that is impacted, then it is game over as it can only be replaced with brand new parts at a cost that would easily exceed current market value of the car.

Sadly I think the same. I feel that the repair cost will exceed 75% of the value. I quickly added the costs of just the exterior stuff that I could see and it was already between 10 and 20k. Not counting the calipers, wheels, or wiring either. The car also had a chassis error...I believe the air suspension was broken as well. No idea how much that costs.

In the event of a total loss, what is the best method for me to get the most out of my payout so I can start looking for another Taycan? Do I look for similarly specc'd with similar mileage on cargurus, carvana, carmax, evercars, algonation? Are there any other sites I'm missing?

Thanks. My wife and I only had this car for just over 6 months...we're both pretty gutted about this.

Insurance companies will offer you replacement cost. If they lowball you, then contest it and send them comparable cars listed on carmax, carvana, etc. If reasonable, and not an outlier, they will usually agree to the amount.

I was looking at the first picture and thought “that’s not that bad” and then the rest of the pics showed up and was like nope. Total loss for sure.

I hope that's a total loss - you don't want it any more after this.

And like the others I bet it will be. Every body panel on the side is damaged, plus frame integrity and who knows what to the battery/cooling system.

not your fault
  • other guy's insurance is screwed
  • besides direct parts/labor/paint (and possible batteryO) repair value their "diminished value" claim (i.e. what the car will lose in value because carFax will show it was wrecked"
  • if there is battery damage that will total the car alone for replacement
  • even if it's affordable (which it's not) car will be unavailable for an extended period during repairs - loaner cars that are of equivalent class/status are far/few between and expensive
  • I'd push hard to make the other guy's insurance cash you out generously
  • might even be worth hiring a lawyer to maximize the pay out
    • add up all the factors with a good lawyer (costs, diminished value, carFax, quality loaner, time lost, pain/suffering) and insurance company is buying a new car …
there is no way you want this back even if it's repaired - make the liable party pay the damages for their actions…

silver lining - it's time for new car shopping ;-)

Give Insurance company window sticker! You will get the tax back as well! if you only had it six months should at least get what you paid! Prices have upticked slightly on used market so may be in your favour!

Sorry you are dealing with this MrStak . My wife was rear ended and her car was totaled. Only took a week to get the news. We retained a lawyer but only for personal injury; he didn't really get involved with the insurance companies regarding the car. So I'll tell you if you are comfortable negotiating on your own behalf (and being politely aggressive) you can keep all of what a lawyer would take to resolve the claim. We got her a replacement car within a few weeks.

I'm on this forum because I just purchased a 2024 Taycan from the dealership and I'm glad to tell you I paid 45% less than sticker. And it's a CPO for peace of mind. I've been very happy with no regrets on the purchase so as another post said: time to go shopping. There are some steals out their IMHO.

Irrespective of any potential battery, cooling system damage or hidden damage. The body work alone exceeds the value of the vehicle. I had much less damage to the driver's side two doors, rear wheel and rear quarter and the cost to repair was almost $30k.

thanks everyone for the input. somehow the shop said it's fixable. i mean i get that everything can be fixed...but at what cost. so i'll be heading to the shop today to get clarification on what exactly they mean and such. there's no way they're gonna convince me it'll "buff out". still waiting on the insurance appraiser to look at the car as well
