Looking to buy my first radar detector as I have a trip to Colorado coming up at the end of the month which I will take in my Defender. Afterwards I plan on mounting it to the Taycan, so looking for recommendations on what has worked for you.

Uniden has the best ones. Uniden R4 is the best value and that's what I use. Or you can spend the extra on an R8 and get the benefit of arrows and better rear signal detection.

I've detected radar from as far as 2 miles away on flat roads. The range is really impressive and it has a lot of convenience features like GPS lockouts and false alert muting so it's not annoying when driving around town. Highly recommended.

I've had very good luck with Escort Redline 360. My daughter has a portable unit that worked well for me when I used it from Colorado to AZ last year (picking up a 911 in C Springs). If you're a "spirited" driver and plan on keeping your Defender a while, consider the Redline 360 ci. This is a full stealth installation and you can integrate the radar display into your rear view mirror.

I love Valentine detectors....have three, one in each vehicle.
They detect front/rear/side, left-right radar and laser.
Very sensitive....I don't leave home without them.

Are there any good ones that you can hardwire? I have an older Escort model and I’m wondering if I can replace some components with updated hardware.

I use the Valentine 1 Gen2 and I love it. Great range, multi-mode selection for different driving environments and you can hard wire it very easily into the center of the windsheild pod. 1 think to be aware of is to mount it as high as possible on the windshield, into the black perforated strip, particularly if you speced thermal/sound insulated glass.

Just keep Waze open even if not using it for Nav. It has a large following and people pretty much mark all the hidden cops on the highways which is especially good for the ones using laser.

Colorado resident here that uses the Uniden R7 ($550 ebay). GPS memory is a must as it silences all of the false hits. Otherwise, it never stops buzzing. In Colorado there are 3 main types of radar guns. K band which is used by the county police/sheriff, easy detectable, lots of false hits. KA band which is used by city police and state patrol, seldom false hits. Recently the state patrol has started using Lidar, undetectable by radar detectors. My last speeding ticket was on I70 near Floyd hill and I ask the state patrolman what he used, he said Lidar and that it's a new tech that can't be detected. Not many in circulation tho.
The R7/8 can be hardwired but I switch mine between cars.
This detector has saved me somewhere between 10-20 tickets as I always drive fast.

Doesn't the insulated/acoustic glass interfere with an interior detector?

Waze is a good app for traffic and users do report locations of police (which is helpfull) but my experience is the police that have been flagged by waze users are typically not actively gunning drivers, rather just posted up on the side of the road. Frequently Colorado cops work as teams or actively gun oncoming traffic while driving to counter being located.

Valentine 1 gen 2 connected with Mirror Tap, Waze running through Apple Carplay or Android.

Waze needs another user to tag a cop, but its still a useful data points. In areas I know they hide I do a slow pass to see if they are hiding, tag them in Waze, then go back and drive how I want if they are not there.

My X ans K band are completely off , only KA and L alert. Lidar is what you have to worry about. Only way to counter that is with a Laser jammer but thats expensive and requires invasive installation which i won't do.

I also have an attorney as back up which Is necessary

Yeah already run Waze but I don’t like full reliance on it, and crowdsourcing sometimes doesn’t work on curvy backroads where I like to take the Taycan to. I figured for the 16hr drive from Austin to Aspen would be a good drive to try one out.

Expect multiple speed traps on 82 between Glenwood and Aspen. Or take Independence pass which would be amazing but bring yack sacks for your passenger and be prepared to buy new tires in Aspen.
