Electric car of the year and joint winner The Sunday Times car of the year
Porsche Taycan 4S
From £83,580
When you’re buying electronics — phones, televisions, laptops — it often pays to wait, rather than rush for the latest model. Choosing an electric car is no exception. When it was launched last year, the top-of-the-range Taycan, the Turbo S, cost £138,826. Those who held off have been rewarded by the car in the picture, the 4S. At £83,580 it’s a huge saving, and it’ll do 90% of what the Turbo S will do for 60% of the price. In some respects it’s a better car. It rides on smaller wheels, making it more comfortable, and it’s two blokes lighter than the Turbo S. The 4S is important in another respect too. It has muscled in on Elon Musk’s party, showing that Tesla isn’t the only one that can build a desirable volts-wagon. Confounding sceptics, the 4S proves that little of the driving enjoyment petrolheads associate with a Porsche has been lost. Which leaves only one question: what to call its fans? Plugheads?
