I’m really interested in buying a used Porsche Taycan with low mileage. My biggest concern is the number of issues I’ve been reading about with first-generation models, especially stories of owners needing to tow the car to the dealership frequently just to keep it drivable. I understand it may not be the most reliable car, but I’m mainly looking for insight into the typical costs associated with the main issues people are experiencing
hi

I’ve had my 2022 Turbo S Cross Turismo from new. It’s done 80,000 miles in 20 countries and I use it daily. It’s a beast, a real apex predator and comfortable. Feels like 3 cars in 1.

Real maintenance costs are low: servicing & tyres. I have extended the warranty (£3,000 for 3 years). This, and the original warranty, has funded 27 separate warranty claims. They collect the car, leave me a courtesy car and deliver it when finished. It gets very frustrating. Somehow I still love the car.

I got the dealer to do a health check on the battery earlier this month. 91% of original charge. This and independent research on the HV battery lead me to expect 300K miles+ at down to 70%.

Kind regards

If I may add a simple thing with my legal background : I'm not a lawyer, but I've seen and negotiated many business contracts in the semiconductor industry (working/leading business lawyers).
Some types of laws can supercede any contracts, insurances, T&C (terms & conditions) of a company (in France it's called "Lois de police", in the EU some consumer-protection laws follow a similar idea), but they can not be invoked "lightly".
To keep it simple, if "someone" or a "collective" can prove in court that battery defects #x/y/z match the definition of a design defect, a safety issue or a few other "titles", then it doesn't matter how Porsche qualifies it, they would have to fix it by a recall.
I'm not saying there is or there isn't such design/safety issue on a scale wide enough to justify all this - no idea about that.
Just saying that, if there is, then there is a path (iwht money & will), either through legal action, or also via pressure of the community on the PR of Porsche (works better in the US than EU though alas).

Otherwise, to stay on topic, I'm driving my Turbo since 1 week now, for small distances, running errands etc
I don't live in a super "rich" neighbourhood so I was a bit concerned by people's reaction in general (not because I care, just because of possible consequences on the car), and up to now it's been really "cool" : a few people said "oh your car is beautiful sir" etc, positive comments overall.
Then driving-wise, I haven't noticed a change in behaviour of other drivers vs my previous car (Xpeng G9 Perf), and it's a pleasure to drive it to run any errand.

Just 2 weak points :
autonomy (but I knew it) - negative temperatures in Paris, I haven't "played" much on the pedal but it shows 40kwh / 100km - which seems huge but could be wrong, I'll see over a few months, and towards summer I'll check what the "max range" is really.

Despite the rear camera I have (very slightly) scratched the white paint on the wheels while trying to park as close as possible of the sidewalks because the car is so large bouhouuuuuuuuu lol

2020 4S no significant issues daily driver! (n=1) I even sold my subaru after a year it's been so reliable. (wife has a tesla not totally solo taycan)

My father in law had a 2020 and also has had no significant issues. This made me quite confident (n=2) to buy the much cheaper 2020 generation with the internet recommendation of avoid first gen.

Agree with above though - I would not have bought without the warranty. I also did the CPO+1 extended warranty and have slept peacefully.

I purchased through the Porsche website obviously. I tried to ask about battery heath reports and no dealership was interested in providing that. They just answered "it's got the warranty bro" and I accepted my fate to be what it will be...

Anywayyyy you should totally do it. This car is so awesome. It's a speedy curvy monster. It's also a chill daily driver for work and errands, even bought a roof rack for those outdoorsy vibes.

I have a 2020 delivered to me in October. I never had one issue with mine. My 12v battery never crapped out. I never had to tow the car anywhere, my charging cable never overheated.

As a daily driver, i highly recommend.

In 3 years and 80,000 miles your car has been to the repair shop 27 times?

Yes. For warranty repairs:

  • Repeated charging system faults, including:
    • Passenger-side and driver-side charge port failures
    • Charge port door / locking actuator (solenoid) failures (replaced more than once)
    • “Charging door impaired” and “impaired charging” warnings
    • Interrupted and failed AC and DC charging
    • Vehicle unable to charge at public rapid chargers on at least one occasion

  • High-voltage charger / charging electronics faults and related diagnostics
  • OTA / telematics / GSM antenna failures:
    • Loss of LTE connectivity
    • OTA inoperative
    • VTS / communication module replacement and reprogramming
    • Antenna wiring and loom work

  • PCM / infotainment system failures, including:
    • PCM rebooting during journeys
    • Navigation system restarting mid-route
    • SatNav lag between PCM display, instrument cluster, and HUD
    • Charging planner calculation errors
    • Multiple software updates and reprogramming attempts

  • Parking Assist system fault:
    • “Active Parking Support not available – Chassis height too high”
    • ParkAssist only operating at lowest suspension setting
    • Recurrent fault reported over multiple years

  • Cooling system / radiator fan failures:
    • Loud fan noise during charging
    • Fan “no communication” faults
    • Radiator fan replacement
    • Repeat noise after earlier repair

  • Suspension system issues:
    • Air strut gaiters replaced
    • Chassis and ride-height related fault codes

  • Rear axle steering fault (repair and component replacement)
  • Electric parking brake faults:
    • Warning messages
    • Actuator replacement and recalibration

  • Interior noise issues:
    • Recurrent ticking noise behind PCM when warming up
    • Rattles from door cards and vents

  • Seat mechanism noise (driver’s seat creak repaired)
  • Glass roof failure:
    • Stress cracking without impact
    • Full panoramic glass roof replacement

  • Trim and body hardware failures:
    • Wheel-arch trims and underbody trim repeatedly coming loose
    • Replacement of brackets, clips, and fixings

  • Multiple Porsche campaigns applied, including:
    • OTA / communication control unit campaigns
    • Brake hose replacement campaign
    • PSM / power electronics reprogramming campaigns

Buying Taycan as a non daily driver is questionable since it is an EV sport limousine not a weekend "toy" car. Especially with its depreciation, the more the drive less the price.
+1. Battery degradation is there even if it is not driven.
If the range is not enough for the personal routines rather buy an ICE.

My log per 3,5 years/65k km:
- Right charger door issue
- 11kW OBD replace
2 heater replaces under normal services. Both worked well, recall routine, and front brake liners replace, also recall next to couple of PCM software refresh.

Wow that’s a list😳

Your dealership must be conveniently close. I can’t imagine going back that many times.

Did they actually fix everything? A lot of those things seem like software bugs and annoyances. Others (parts replaced) seem like terrible luck.

90 min drive each way. Fortunately they do the driving. My wife thinks it’s a Friday car. If we lived in the US it would have been replaced under the ‘lemon laws’.
