SAE is standardizing NACS – making it less dependent on Tesla

SAE is Standardizing NACS Connector

https://electrek.co/2023/06/27/sae-standardizing-nacs-less-dependent-on-tesla/

SAE International today announced it will standardize the Tesla-developed North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. This will ensure that any supplier or manufacturer will be able to use, manufacture, or deploy the NACS connector on electric vehicles (EVs) and at charging stations across North America. Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Rivian, and a number of EV charging companies recently announced plans to adopt the NACS connector through adaptors or future product offerings.

What is Porsche’s response to this?

Electrify America to offer Tesla's EV charging connector by 2025

https://eresearch.fidelity.com/eres...ryid=202306291302RTRSNEWSCOMBINED_L4N38L3AC_1

Sort of an indirect reply from VW through EA. Sounds like they are accepting NACS as inevitable. Why it will take EA until 2025 is a mystery. Charge Point just announced that their equipment can now be had with NACS and retrofits are available.
So does that mean we have to change the receiving unit on our cars? I know that's a stupid question but don't Tesla's chargers have a different interactivity?

"in discussions" might mean anything but I'll give the VW group the benefit of doubt and assume they are serious. An adapter and access to Tesla's network isn't absolutely necessary for long distance travel but would make it far, far less stressful. Assuming the 150kW option was spec'd you would get reliable access to decent charge speeds as opposed to a crap shoot of an EA 350 unit.

Our cars would require a Tesla to CCS1 adapter. Apparently easy to do (it already exists at the Magic Dock stations). Software behind the scenes might not be quite as easy to allow non-Tesla vehicles to charge at a Supercharger. It currently works and exists at the Magic Dock equipped Superchargers.

no change required -there will be an adapter or multiple cables with CCS1 and NACS - in a few years it won't matter as new vehicles will come with NACS.

CCS1 is now like chademo.

shouldn't need software changes to the vehicle with Adatper, because if you're using the adatper a Tesla supercharger is negotiating a CCS charging session - no plug&charge support, but app based activation and you get a CCS session…this Is the the only practical way forward. Otherwise Tesla's stations with magic dock would not work with my unmodified 2020 Taycan Turbo.

Electrify America will continue to provide the Combined Charging System (CCS-1) connector throughout its network as it transitions to also support automakers adding NACS charging ports. The company will work to offer a NACS connector option at existing and future charging stations by 2025 to make charging as convenient as possible for EV owners.

I was mostly thinking of the behind the scenes work necessary to allow plug and charge and make all the necessary billing. I have been encouraged by your "exploits" using the Magic Dock. You have demonstrated that It is absolutely possible with our cars as they are now equipped.

plug&charge will come eventually - but everyone is behind the 8 ball here - CCS protocols plug&charge needs further evolution to support "multiple networks"

so I think for the foreseeable future (out unit at least 2027 or later vehicles w/software updates) in North America is works as follows:
  • plug&charge support at Electrify America _ONLY_ due to exiting limitations in CCS plug&charge support
  • new CCS plug&charge standard for multi-network vendor support - then you'll see plug&charge support at other charging vendors - and it will be Tesla's "move" to add support for any new CCS plug&charge standard to their app/charging site software
app based charge session activation will be the norm at least through 2026 MY vehicle's…

Somewhere in there the government may force EV charging stations to take credit/debit/gift cards for privacy reasons, or instead maybe they will require secret access to who charged where and when. At the very least there should be regulations on data collection and its permitted uses, possibly with GDPR-like rights and protections.
