Doing some road-trip planning at the moment and have a question for any Norwegian local's or folks familiar with the area.

How doable is Bergen to Oslo via the E16 in early January from a weather perspective? is the route mostly open that time of year? Are convoy's (kolonnekjøring) used on that route? It seems well covered with IONITY and chargers but any hints from a winter range perspective welcome.

Trying to avoid planning something that is either unrealistic or not recommended. I am looking for a winter EV driving experience – I don't mind if its challenging – in fact I'd welcome it – just want to make sure I'm not being stupid!

Thank you.

You'll only need a single charge. I did Bergen to Oslo (over Hemsedal) this summer and did not need to charge.

Geilo/Hemsedal would be your charging stop depending on route.

Your drive will depend entirely on the weather. The E16 will most likely be open but might have kolonnekjøring over the mountain if the weather is bad. Make sure you keep enough food and warm clothing if you need to wait a while. I also hope you have Nordic winter tyres since it can be icy on the roads.

Wow I envy you. Done that trip in summer, which was weird as it hardly got dar at all. Beautiful scenery and Bergen is stunning I think. Perhaps take tha southern route on the way back?

And do not forget winter tyres. Even the European ones work quite well in most conditions, but not as good a studded tyres on pure icy roads.

Envlosed look at the test with three Taycans that the Swedish Auto Motor and Sport did. Surprisingly the European winter tyres faired very well. You can get English subtext if you do not understand the language of the Vikings?

Thanks all for the info so far – very helpful.

In terms of tyres – I currently have Pirelli PZero Winter NF0 tyres on the car. I also have the Porsche Taycan snow chains as backup if the tyres are inadequate on icy sections.

I appreciate this isn't going to be as good as Nordic tyres – but the challenge is that I also will have a lot of non-Nordic winter driving to do – via Netherlands, Denmark, etc.

Do you think this combination would be acceptable?

Current plan is to get ferry into Kristiansand, then onto Stavanger, Bergen and over to Oslo before heading for Sweden. But adaptable – will change plans if its not realistic and also of course the changing pandemic situations – being vaccinated isn't as good as it was in the summer for travel.

While I live in Bergen and plan on doing the same trip myself, it’s hard to comment on the tires. There is a rather substantial difference between continental Europe winter tires and the more sturdy ones up north.

A tip is to make sure you drive during day time. It gets dark quickly and the average temperature will probably be below zero for the majority of the trip. So calculate this into range as well.

Plenty of people drive around with 10 year old winter tires without much problems. A relatively new set of European style ones will be much better, so my guess is that you'll do just fine. But winter conditions can be unpredictable.

Thank you to @tigerbalm for starting a positive post on an upcoming road trip! Looking forward to photos!

Better than reading our 22 kW chargers destroy the battery, the battery is faulty on 60% of our cars or all Taycans will spontaneously combust! :)

Its a feature to melt the ice on the road ahead.
