Thank you @tigerbalm for these threads. They convinced me that the car is capable of road trips and re-convinced me even with the current recall and documented issues.

Happy to say our family of four have been smoothly and efficiently whisked half way down Spain from the UK this week. Today’s highlight was going over the Col du Pourtalet.

The level of detail you provide is second to none but I can add that as of today the car hasn’t missed a beat. The French charger network is excellent and we haven’t had to queue once. On the Spanish side we’ll be on siperchargers tomorrow.

Spoke way too soon. Stranded at a supercharger with yellow electrical system warning. ?‍♂

Tried turning off and on to no avail. First time at a supercharger so suspect it’s the 150kw system. Waiting for assistance. ?

After 2 hours of restarting the car while waiting for recovery the issue cleared. I think the app was keeping the car awake otherwise it may have cleared sooner but I’m also not convinced the battery charge the car is reporting is correct so a few things to work through.

We have reached our destination though with only a two hour delay over 1400 miles.

do they have the same regulation on Nordic ferries ?
I find it totally not scientifically (or experimentally) proven ... ?

@tigerbalm semi back on topic but have you found ACC comes with a not inconsiderable efficiency cost?

In middling two lane motorway traffic I found at 120kmh with ACC I was getting 2.2-2.4 m/kwh but driving manually I was getting 2.7-3.0. I only have one data point on the manual as I found ACC and ALK very useful.

Day 1: Dublin (Ireland) -> Holyhead (United Kingdom)

A late evening start to this trip as we leave our apartment at 19:00 for Dublin Port via the 4km long Dublin Port Tunnel under the city. Leaving our Fiat 500 guarding our parking spaces under our apartment.

The roads are their usual busy Friday self but the tunnel gets us to the port and check-in queue within twenty minutes. Leaving tonight avoids an early morning start tomorrow.

We're on the Ulysses tonight – once one of the world's largest car ferries – where we've booked a charger for a quick battery top-up – helped by the fact they are free and get you on-board first. The chargers are quick and easy to start and supply a single-phase 7kW AC current to our car.

We decide to grab a cabin to make the time pass more comfortably than hanging out in the public areas.

We stand on deck before departure giving us a great view of the iconic chimneys – of a disused electricity generation station – at the mouth of the port of Dublin.

Where we watch a departing Stena Line ferry that will be crossing the Irish Sea alongside us. We took this ship in February.

After an uneventful and smooth crossing we dock into Holyhead harbour on-schedule just after midnight. We drive to our hotel just a kilometre away from where we disembarked – check-in and head to sleep. At least we don't have to be on the road for 06:00 tomorrow!

Never heard of that. No such rule on any of the ferries we're taking and in fact we charged up on the Irish Ferries ship we've just taken (for free).

I always leave the car on AC "eco" mode with cabin temperature of 18 degrees – and forget about it. I've never done consumption figures without AC on as can't imagine I'd ever want it off.

I've also never seen the need to run it in non-eco mode – but we are rarely driving in anything above 25C ambient temperatures.

Sorry, acc - I meant adaptive cruise control. I think the lack of coast and anticipation has quite an impact on range

MyPorsche Route Planning

Solid changes recently to the mapping function within MyPorsche – allowing for very clear control of the charging plan.

It still comes with the caveat that the car will re-calculate the route according to its own settings and data available at the time you send the plan to the car. However, any explicit charging stations you've added to the route in the app will be honoured.

Oh, understood. Yes have seen that myself. But value ACC for long motorway trips too much to care!

Agreed. I may choose to go manual on the way home when I need to push some range. It’s easy to hop between IONITY chargers in France and not have to worry but the Spanish infrastructure is an entirely different beast.

Day 2: Holyhead (United Kingdom) -> Hull (United Kingdom)

Porsche Taycan Taycan to the Norwegian Fjords (Summer 2024 Trip Journal) Screenshot 2024-08-10 at 18.53.12

The first three days of this trip is all about getting to Norway as efficiently and enjoyably as possible. This time, we're going via a new route – joining a P&O ferry at Hull to Rotterdam Europort. It will be interesting to compare it to our winter route via Harwich. Hull is much closer to Dublin than Harwich, so we're trading a shorter drive for a longer time on the ferry,

It is a sunny start to our day and our car is ready to bring us across the United Kingdom after we wipe off some bird poop – it is rare for our car to spend an overnight out in the open.

Overall it is a wet day with heavy traffic and some stop/go traffic jams across the motorway network.

A highlight of the day was driving through the peak district and enjoying the twisty roads at 100 km/h – getting a taste of what a Taycan Turbo S is capable of in the bends.

We reach our only charging stop – and first of this trip – at IONITY Sheffield – which looks to be a relatively new station with nine pedestals. We plug into a one and it only gives us 155 kW of power – but we're not rushing so happy enough with that and it keeps it in a flat curve deep into the battery.

We arrive at the Port of Hull in plenty of time and are allowed to board immediately.

Parking up on the three story high truck deck. We're about 11 hours on this crossing and the My Porsche app only allows us to set PVTS+ (Porsche Vehicle Tracking Service) for ten hours.

Normally we just ring the security centre to get them to manually set it for longer – but with the maze of new menu items – it doesn't look like that is possible any longer. Lets see what happens when we arrive into Netherlands.

It is busy on deck as we watch our ship leave Hull.
