OP:"So - what do folks think is the closed EV alternative to the Taycan? I'm looking for a similar mix of driving experience/performance and prestige."

Xiaomi has no prestige even between phones.

It's interesting to see what different people prioritise. And really, no judgment on that. Different folks, different strokes they say.

I personally don't care about prestige. I drive the car for me, not for others. My priorities are driving dynamics, an interior that makes me say "this is a nice place to be" and a nice sleek exterior design.

Whether that is provided by Porsche or Dacia, it's ultimately irrelevant for me.

I had a similar dilemma, from a mildly different angle, and I went with a Hyundai Ionic 5N. I didn't care as much about prestige, even though the Taycan looks absolutely fabulous. The far-from-great Porsche service/service timelines and lack of proper customer care (basically Porsche don't care if you're a customer or not), did it for me. I just wanted a car that drove well, was nice and comfortable, big enough for me and put a smile on my face. All while being a nice place to be.

The I5N does all of this. It's as good to drive as the Taycan and actually can be more fun, but doesn't fulfil the luxury brief as well. It is still very comfortable day to day and on long journeys though. And the tech is better. I advise to drive one. At least then you can discount it from a position of experience. The only bad thing I've found so far is the terrible turning circle (no RWS), which I can live with.

I looked at Polestars and decided that they weren't as good as the I5N for the actual driving experience. Nice inside though.

Plus, I still have a 997 911...

Polestar are quite common In Sweden and the feedback from owners is very mixed. Main complaint is charging times and range in winter is terrible.

Polestar will face a major issue going forward because every model has a different OS platform. I think some reviewers mentioned 5 different OS. That will take manpower to maintain,

The prestige of having the car 3 months in service and broken navigation 😅

If you look how the people in the auto world react when reviewing the Xiaomi, and how highly their cars are being praised by western reviewers, I would suspect that prestige will come to Xiaomi shortly also.

And maybe Xiaomi has no prestige in the phone world in western markets, but in Asia it is THE premium brand.

And I would say people that care so much about “prestige” don’t buy EVs. They are still looked down upon by the most auto enthusiasts. Porsche badge makes little difference.

Ah, the porsche approach to software.
🤣

Wasn’t even aware that they do it like this. I thought they all run Google automotive. When I drove one it seemed fine software wise, but these sort of problems take long time to shower their teeth.

I would suspect they will take eventually a similar approach to their brother/cousin in the geely family, Volvo, and update the infotainment hardware and software for free to the latest one.

You know what LOTUS is the abbreviation for don’t you?

LOTUS = Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious!

Ask me how I know?
Definitely true for their gas cars.

I have no idea if that’s true for this EV built in China. 🤷‍♂️

In this case it is better, judging by sales, reviews and track records.

But you are of course entitled to your opinion. The badge is definitely important for a certain type of client.

All of this gives me hope for the upcoming Genesis GV60 Magma.

While I respect the 5N, IMHO its interior is missing the luxury that I prefer. The GV60 Magma will address that.

It is definitely more 'fancy hot hatch', then luxury. But it's comfortable and easy to use and looks nice with good materials. I didn't buy it as a luxury barge 👍

I just prefer the original, that’s all. Way too many design elements have been stolen from the Taycan. That makes in my eyes a copy.

The Ioniq 5 is a really nice car, I owned one back in 2021 for a short while.
Drive wise it's quite far removed from the Taycan though, and of course the suspension is much less sophisticated.
I preferred the recline upgraded seats though, when I tried the Ioniq 5 N the seats were kinda "too sporty" for me with little adjustment. The problem that the Ioniq 5 has is that the car is heavy and the load carrying capacity is low (max weight).
So when they put in the bigger motors in the N they had to save weight somehow and they opted to do that by chucking lighter seats in.

But still loved my 2021 AWD. Very comfortable and the interior was airy and roomy with the movable center console - the complete opposite of the Taycan :D
