Tesla Universal Wall Charger and Porsche Taycan

I think some are confusing that the 3rd generation Tesla charger from earlier generations; the third generation comes either in a regular NACS-only $535 “Wall Connector” version OR a $600 “Universal Wall Connector” version for with the latter having already has its Magic Dock adapter ilocked inside it. The later Universal one gives the person wanting to charge any EV the option of pulling out the NACS end from within the charger (identical to the Tesla NACS end it had on its previous generations), OR when pulling out the charging cord, inserting at that time also your index finger into the top of that same removal area (same hand), and pulling out the cord with the Magic Dock adapter attached.

The Magic Dock J-1772 adapter once pulled out that way, cannot be separated from the NACS regualr system unless one first re-inserts the then combined unit into the wall charger and next time chooses to pull out only the NACS-ended charging cord. At no time can one separate the Magic Dock J-1772 adapter from the regular NACS end.

Turn off "charging schedule" in the Tesla app. Set the desired charging times in the car and the Tesla wall connector will act as a fancy extension cord and charge whenever the car asks for juice. Both J1.1 and J1.2 cars have always followed whatever was set in the car as long as the charging schedule in the app is off.

You pop the adapter onto the end charging cable to charge a Tesla on the universal unit. No adapter is needed to charge the Taycan, just plug straight in to charge.

Good call out. I should have said j1772 connector or end plug. No adapter.

I’ve tried disabling the scheduling in the Tesla app and it still won’t use the car schedule. Porsches pros said it’s a known issue. Probably user error!

Tesla make two Tesla Wall Chargers

1. Wall Connector - Native NACS charging cord - you need to BYO J-1772 adapter if you want to charge a J-1772 EV
2. Universal Wall Connector - Native NACS charging cord - and built-in J-1772 adapter that you can "pull out" when you extract the charging cord
   1. if you do "nothing" when you pull out the cord you get a NACS charging cord
   2. if you press "the button" you get a J-1772 charging cord
   3. the J-1772 adapter is "built-in" to the docking port for NACS cord and can be extracted when you remove the cord from the holster…

I highly recommend the Tesla Universal Wall Connector for the following reasons:

• adjustable AMPs for different breaker sizes 15-60 amp breakers - max charging rate is 48 amps on a 60 amp break
• well integrated J-1772 adapter and slick user experience to deploy the adapter
• WiFi for OTA updates and configuration
• Decent stats and monitoring via internet
• Can be configured for charging schedule to enforce appropriate times to charge and not charge connected EV's
• can be configured to allows: any EV, only Tesla's, only Tesla w/Vin
• your can configure up to 6 Tesla gen 3 wall chargers to "share" a given 240V circuit capacity making these the ideal charger for a multi-EV/Hybrid home charging setups
  • you can mix Tesla Wall Connectors and Tesla Universal Wall Connectors in this configuration…
• once setup up - it "just works"
• best "dock" for DYI installs - super simple to install and setup if you want to DYI your charging installation - really really well thought out and easy to wire and mount.
• [optional] Powerwall integration - unit(s) can be configured to cut-off charging if you home battery drops below a certain % - which means your EV's won't drain your home batteries if there is a power outage while you're charging your EV(s)
• visually nice looking design with optional colored face plates
• one of the most affordable 60/48 amp EVSE's in North American - it's hard to find an EVSE with this feature set for less money and/or higher quality.

With our 2027 Taycan GTS order going info in a little while, yet our current need for us to get a replacement EVSE, but this time hardwired, with sometimes family and friends EV’s visiting us with needing a charge for their J-1772 equipped EV’s, we are thinking of now installing a Tesla Universal Wall Charger

Anyone with an adapter charged their Taycan with a Tesla wall charger? Or had/have a Tesla for some other EV they have charged with a Tesla wall charger?

The first photo shows the entire unit as installed, the second photo shows the naked end that will plug directly into your Taycan for level two charging, the third photo shows the adapter and the naked end separated that are used to charge a Tesla, and the fourth photo shows the adapter inserted into the naked end to charge a Tesla. Tesla offered these units for sale for at least 6 months and then Introduced the Tesla Universal Wall Charger…which is different than the one pictured in this post - I know I owned one and it's now at my neighbor's house…I gifted it to him to clear way for a Universal unit.

the Tesla Universal Wall Charger has a native NACS charging cord and integrated J-1772 dock/holster adapter…it's very different than what is pictured here.

all of these Tesla EVSE's are gen-3 Wall chargers will different native charging cords. Tesla no longer offers the J-1772 unit for sale as the Universal model (NACS & J-1772 adapter) has now replaced it in their product offerings.

Interesting. Please note that this unit was purchased directly from Tesla as a universal charger at the time I bought it. It appears their universal charging units have evolved over time.
