for 2020, the wired is needed, for 2021 it isn't

For MY2020 the wired requirement goes away after the WMA5 update. I don't think there is any regional limitation on that.

Just for the record, once your iPhone is connected wirelessly and you have CarPlay working, you can charge via a USB C cord attached to one of the ports in the back (between the two rear seats).

I find this very convenient and there is no crushing of the cord, or lifting of the armrest cover involved.
