Hi, I am looking to buy a used CT and based on what is available within my price range it seems that I will have to compromise on some options that I would have liked.

Regarding Sport Chrono - If you don't have it, how easy is it to change drive modes (to Sport for example) whilst driving the car? Is it buried in a menu somewhere. Just wondering whether I could live without the toggle switch

It requires 3 taps of the main screen. Car icon, then ‘drive mode’, then ‘sport’.

Two different responses there! I wonder whether the route through the screens is different for cars with Sport Chrono versus those without

It's just one tap. There's a Sport setting on the bottom left of the center console screen. Don't know if it's a configurable shortcut—mine came with it already that way. You press the same "button" to return to Normal mode.
Do you have the remote parking feature? I believe if you have that feature, then the sport button is replaced with the remote parking button.

....and looking at the images of a Cross Turismo that does have SC, it looks like that button is for gravel mode

If it has SC, there will be no "sport" button you can tap on that screen.
If the CT has the offroad package, it will probably say "gravel"
without SC and no offroad package it will say "sport"

you can play with limited PCM user interface simulator here to gauge ease of use : https://your-digital-co-pilot.com/

Also note:
- your frequency of use may not be as high as you believe. This has been the case for me with all my prior BMWs (including M cars with similar drive configurator concept) and my Taycan for the last 15 years. I even have limited use of my Individual mode as it's not a daily use case for me. The "Normal" default is sufficient IMO and the wheel's mode selector is a novelty.

- only "individual" mode's configuration can be stored. All others are presets can be changed on the fly, but then resets to default

I don't have that feature and also don't have Sport Chrono. The presence of that Sport button kinda deprioritized my need for SC. I didn't realize that the presence of that button wasn't a common feature across all cars!

You can personalise the My Home Screen adding 3 tiles of your choice - one of these can be Drive Mode - single tap.

This will then become your default Home Screen and visible on power on.

Even without the offroad package, it’s a gravel button that you will find on CT in the center screen

Is there not also a Drive mode display for the right binnacle of the main dash display? I assume you can then use the steering wheel buttons to switch between the options.

I believe so. CT's with sport chrono have the 'haptic' button on the lower screen for range mode.

If you don't have sport chrono the button on the lower screen is for sport mode instead. Range mode involves going into the menus, not a big deal.

Having seen the other replies I'm not sure if the off road design package makes that button range, it might do. Another good reason not to want that either!

I have no regrets skipping sport chrono.

And another thing...

There are often complaints about not being able to see all the instrument panel. Without sport chrono you get the standard wheel, no mode wheel but, I believe, also not as chunky.

I am inclined to think that Porsche designed the screen layout using the standard wheel as, although it's hard to photograph, everything is more or less what I see. I'm 6' 1".

No regrets here about the non-sport wheel either.
