Why Everyone Should Run Summer Tires - Even Electric Cars!

Summer tires are the performance option for enthusiasts who want the most out of their cars. These tires offer more grip, better steering feel, and better handling – not to mention better stopping distance rain or shine. But does all that grip come at a compromise? Electric vehicles need tires with low rolling resistance to maximize range, and often, rolling resistance is at odds with grip. In this video we’ll deep dive into Hankook’s iON evo tire, a summer tire offered for both electric cars and electric SUVs, to maximize warm weather performance without a big loss in rolling resistance or noise levels.

Hope they will get the NF0 approval on the Hancock tyres soon. A lot of other Porsches have Hankook mounted from factory now.

And Hancock on other cars have been really good. Lots of grip and nice to drive.

I got factory installed pirellis for summer and they are amazing. When driving with regen off it just keeps rolling and rolling. Compared to winter tyres there’s a lot more grip as well. I have a good bend in my neighborhood about 60 degree turn. Summer 21” max speed before it starts going straight into the trees is 98kmh, on winters it was about 75-ish

The EU label "AAA" rating is a very impressive achievement by Hankook – considering the new dedicated Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyre appears have a "BBB" rating*. Pushing the Hankook up to the top of my consideration list if I was to go for a non-NF0 tyre.

Interestingly the 305/30 R21 is rated at "AAA" but the thiner 265/35 R21 for the front axle is a "BAA" meaning the rolling resistance is a little bit worse.

I wonder what is the net impact to rolling resistance if the front axle has a "B" rating and the rear axle has a "A" rating?

Also, these new EU labels for tyres are brilliant consumer info for cross shopping.

Comparing the Hankook iON ratings (above) to the Goodyear and Pirelli (what I currently have) factory options.

Really shows that those factory tyres are starting to look like a bit "old tech".

Yep they are advertised on Hankook's USA site attached to an Audi e-tron - Ion-Evo Summer and AS tires and they point to that EU rating result:

Re Hankooks here in US - can really only see the AS nad SUV variants for sale (Discount Tire and Walmart! etc - none on TireRack) i.e. sedan/wagon summer tire not available or stock limited?

Read through a no. of posts on a MachE forum from last two months and a lot of positive comments on quietness and poss. range improvements (speculative) etc, but some who moved from Michelin Pilot Sport saying great all round but not as good in corners/handling as the Pilot Sport.

Interesting, here in the EU – they seem widely available from all the usual on-line retailers.

If you look for Assymetric 5 instead, they have improved their ratings now Compared to Assymeyric 3

I put these on and they feel good. Noise level feels lower but can also be because of warmer weather. Just hope they will wear as well as the old ones.

But still not as low noise as Hankook.

That's great info. Are these the first tyres to get NF0 rating since the Taycan was released?

My car was delivered with Good Year Eagle Assymetric 3 in 2020 and they were NF0 then. Guess GoodYear then updated these to Assymetric 5 and kept NFO spec. Believe I also have seen some Assymetric 6 advertised but not found them online? My Porsche service advisor recommended either Eagle F1 or Pirelli. Pirelli very good for grip but sticky and higher consumption and higher wear he said.

Heard from another service centre that Hankook seem to be in the process to be certified, but have no further info on which model or when. Would make sense since so many Porsches seem to have them in the showrooms.

I am a great Michelin fan since many years, but these GoodYears have been a very positive experience! I was not too happy when I saw them on my car initially because of very old experience with GoodYear.
