high battery temperature while fast charging?

friends, here comes the situation:

Scenario: -5 Celsius outside, heading to Porsche Supercharger (up to 300kw I believe). Nav set, battery pre-heating. Arrived at 32 Celsius in the battery pack, 20% SoC. Started charging at 160kw/h, then dropped to 120kw/h upon reaching 80%. The battery temperature ended up as seen in the picture.

Question: is it normal? The fans were audible, snow/slush was covering the wheel arches (maybe some airflow restrictions?). Did not climb further, cooled to 31 Celsius quickly after disconnecting and driving a bit.

That's extremely high. I have never seen mine gone above 107F before and the ambient temperature was quite high (100F+)...this was over this last summer in Texas.

49 °C is 120 °F and I've never seen such a high battery temperature. The highest I've seen when DC charging at 160 kW during the hot southwest USA summer is 43 °C / 109 °F. FYI I enabled battery-friendly charging in the PCM, so the max I can charge is 200 kW.

Glad your battery's temperature cooled quickly after disconnecting.

Restricted cooling airflow sounds directionally correct, and I hope someone with expert knowledge can chime in.

I’ve hit 53c during an Ionity charge before. Brief appearance of the yellow turtle but by the time it hit the high 80s percentage-wise it had cooled down to mid 40s.

The temperature you have reached whole charging is completely normal!! And your temperature quickly settled back down to 31 C which is normal operating temperature. You can see a small orange lunge in the temp display and if you get close to that you will see turtle mode appearing and the charging will be throttled until battery cools a bit..

On a long day trip ( 800km), I see that the normal battery temperature is 31 C while driving. If the PCM plans the stops etc I normally arrive at Ionity with 39 to 41 C. On hot days I normally leave the car in Sport plus mode and the cooling fans spool up. In winter time I leave it in Normal or Sport depending on mode I have driven in.

The main advice from Porsche here though, is that you should not drive away in Range mode! The cooling is not sufficient in that mode after a Rapid charge (>200 kW!). Stated in the manual.

Mainly relevant for hot climates with more than 35 C ext temp. Not so often in Europe. But I still feel the temperature equals out faster across the different cells. Can be seen via CarScanner app!

in my case, given that the air vents are situated in the wheel arches, plugging those with snow slush did not help the cooling either.

To say the least! It’s more a game of seeing if the range will ever top 200 miles again for the next few months right now. All good fun!

I am in cold Stockholm with -8C and quite a bit of snow at the moment. GOM still showing more than 3r0 km range, which I think is very good. Car parked in underground car park for a few days though and freshlyAC charged.

The Taycan on 20 inch winter tyres is a hoot to drive. On a deserted supermarket (huge) car park, it was fun experiencing the 4 wheel drive and stability systems. So much fun, could do that all day!
