I re-did the electrics to my garage with 16mm SWA (£8/m) + glands (£12/pair) + Garage CU inc Fuse (£42) + 63A MCB (£4), with labour being the biggest part to dig up the paved drive.

To then install the commando socket was about another + £150 in parts for RCD + socket + cable, plus labour, which was about 1 day or £200 to do all of the above.

I also ordered a 10m commando extension cable for £80 delivered, as it's at the back of my garage.

In my case i also stuck an outside fusebox in-between (to feed the back-garden and provide an easy point to install my EV charger) which was about another £300 in parts (waterproof CU + 16mm cable + fuses) + labour.

I have just today booked for the EO Mini Pro 2 to be installed (nice and easy from that outside fusebox now!) which is £615 including the grant via Octopus. It's booked for 2 weeks, on Wed 25th, so still in lockdown which, thankfully, doesn't seem to have effected anything from having an EV point installed, having the car delivered, having if PPF/detailed, having alarm guy round, or plaster, or electrician or plumber...

Pondering just going for the podpoint now as this would be £550 after grant. I thought the 32a socket option and pmcc would be cheap but doesn’t seem it unless I’m missing something?
If you need a new consumer unit for a 32a socket you'll need one for a dedicated charger too - it depends what your existing installation looks like.

I’ll be honest I don’t know what a consumer unit is! House is only 3 years old, so not sure if would be needed or not. How do you know?

Sounds like alot of work! I have a new build house ( 3 years). Do I get 32a socket installed and use the Porsche charger or podpoint Installed at £550? (After grant)

Take a look at it, it's the thing that has all the breakers (that you flick if a bulb blows or you need to isolate a circuit) mounted in it. There will be a big module on one end which controls the incoming supply - see what that's rated to.

Ah ok, didn’t realise it was that. Thought I needed something additional mounted in the garage.

Says 100a on the switch on left hand side.

So, if this is all good I just need a socket ( £30 ish) and the electrician takes off the original wiring in the garage? That sounds much cheaper !

Is your garage attached to the house? Usually you have CU per building.

An electrician would need to run a cable from the nearest consumer unit to the socket / charger as there is a higher current requirement than the regular wiring can handle.

Looks like that CU would work (but I'm not an electrician).

Yes, attached.

I also have this little unit below the electric meter in the garage. Also has 100a on it?

An electrician should be able to take a new circuit right off the meter with minimal disruption - it looks like pretty much the ideal setup for an EV charger install (just adding a socket or a full dedicated unit).

You are super lucky as looks like your grid power in is in your garage so the EV charger can run off that - normally you have to run from the nearest CU / fuseboard, but you already have one there that can support the power you need. For a 32A charger you need a 40A fuse (+20%). If you checked the fuse in the meter box what does it say? 100A?

Good stuff. Indoor and smaller outdoor unit both have 100a printed on them so presume ok. It is a new build and we have underfloor heating and air source heat pump so I’m presuming they’ve had to beef the units up to cover this off ? So, in theory I’m good to get an electrician just to add some additional wiring, 32a socket and use the Porsche charger ?

My normal electrician has just had some bad news family wise so not working and don’t have any any other go to electricians and cars build is complete tomorrow so hoping I will have it in 2-4 weeks so need a solution quickly!

Shouldn’t be a problem mate.

40a fuse, 32A commando socket, the world is your oyster

Decided to take easy option in the end and go for a tethered pod point, £550 ish after grant and decided to mount on the back of the middle pillar so you can’t see it from outside. This means I can charge both sides in the cartlodge and also on the drive if needed. Got a call today saying they had a cancellation and my install looked simple so can do tomorrow. Happy days, cars at Emden docks so should be here soon.

On a side note will I need another lead for charging when out and about?

Thanks for all the help getting me this far!

Yes, you will need a type 2 cable, unless you specced it with the car. Think it was £200ish, however I didn't and I ordered this one, cheapest I could find.

Just to update the thread. PP installed and decided to go front middle on inside pillar of cart lodge. Means I can charge both side in the garage and on the driveway if needed. Also means if I ever wanted to move to the back I can just shorten the feeding cable and re mount. All installed now.
